I'm not planning on having a single role, but a single chassis. If my chosen mech has 3 variants I can mech-lab 1 into a scout optimise the other 2 for other roles. I'm always gaining XP in different variants of the same chassis towards the Elite tiers I can fill whatever role needs filling. If a substantial number of other players think the same, you could see a lot of scout Hunchbacks scout Centurions, not to mention scout Dragons.

IMHO

If you are the Lone Wolf - then it's alright. But no one can be equally good in every role at once and basing on my experience of commanding in the game-which-can't-be-named-here, i prefer to have under my command the people who specialized in one role, but performing in that role as close to the ideal as it's possible. Your chassis, your equipment, your modules, and finally your combat experience - all of these should serve to the one single goal - to do the specific job you're assigned for.

That's how the units which are fighting in the tournaments and at the Global Map are working. And i can bet - in MWO we'll see the same approach for the Merc.Corps.

And that's where I see Piranha making a lot of their money. It's not Pay-2-Win, but some people will be willing to Pay-2-Mod.

The problem I have with that is that it harks a lot to WoT system. Which is "stick" system by defination, not "carrot" what PGI says it's going for. You lose money if you play with the very best tanks, and if you don't play with the very best tanks you will often serve as what amounts to fodder for the guys that do. So you pay to get the best tanks fast, and you pay to maintain them without using lower level tanks.

Of course, if PGI plans for clear separation between guys who play the high cost/high BV mechlabbed machines and those who play the more economical ones it could work. Competitive play will require the fully teched and fully optimized machines, unless it too has different "leagues".

Granted, if maintaining XL engines will be the most major lynchpin of ingame economy you can design good 'mechs without those.

LOL...as a matter of fact, according to most people I am quite looney. I think that fact that I actually built and use a Jenner (Actually, a full lance of 'em) with nothing but an AC/20 attests to that.

It's not the Jenner with the AC20 that's a bit loopy. It's the Jenner with 56pts of armour. ;)
