Note: This is all fictional. I came up with this story in about an hour.
2nd Note: Something screwed up with the text while posting. Please ignore it.

Location: Jihad Ice Moon
Time: 22:14:26
Operation: Midnight
Unit: 22nd Kell Hounds
Opposition: Unknown

"Recon 1, reporting movement beyond the western ridge," Falroy’s radio coughed, sputtering with interference. Something wasn’t right on this moon. Something was out of place. Lt. Colby, of the 22nd Kell Hounds, shifted his Dragon, a 32 ton Heavy Mech, towards the ridge. He saw movement on top. Beside him, First Sergeants Roy and Hawk, each in a Catapult Medium support mech, armed with two 32-LRMs and a pair of Medium Pulse lasers. A Flea Light recon mech, armed with a Light Gauss Cannon, retreated from the base of the ridge.
"Looks like four unknown battlemechs. Don’t recognize their class," Falroy reported. Great. The lance moved towards the ridge, weapons ready.
"This is Lieutenant Colby, of the 22nd Kell Hounds. Identify yourselves," Colby said over the radio.
"This is Raveshaw Foreblood, of the Smoke Jaguar Clan. Surrender your mechs and your lives will be spared," came the response.
"Oh I don’t think so," said Roy, who unleashed a salvo of missiles at the mechs. They hit one of the mechs, which in turn fired its own salvo back. The missiles hit the Catapult, lurching it back. "****!" Roy yelled. The other Kell Hounds opened fire, spraying the mechs with lasers and machineguns. Colby unleashed his Gauss Cannons, destroying one of the enemy mechs. Suddenly, Falroy’s Flea glowed a brilliant glow, then exploded. Hawk was strafing his Catapult, firing salvo after salvo. Suddenly, his mech exploded like Falroy’s. Colby noticed another mech no top of the Ridge. He opened fire on it. He didn’t see Roy. He was probably dead. His mech was shaking from damage, but hekept on firing. He was a satisfying explosion in the distance. Then he noticed the damage to his own mech.
"Oh, son of a—" Was all he had time to say before his mech was consumed with fire.

I could give you some pointers for your story if you'd like.

Here goes, you can find a ton of information on mechs here:
http://www.sarna.net...ory:BattleMechs

Mechs are graded as follows:
Light: 20 to 35 tons (usually scouts and fast raider type mechs)
Medium: 40 - 55 tons (variable roles, the most common type of mechs around)
Heavy: 60 - 75 tons (Variable roles, usually a bit slower then the mediums)
Assault: 80 - 100 tons (Usually the most heavily armed and armored, low on speed)

And some other pieces of info:
- The Inner Sphere uses lances (units of 4 mechs), the Clans use stars (5 mechs).
- Clan Smoke Jaguar is notoriously brutal and conservative, surrender is not a option especially for mercs. Smoke Jaguars would simply declare a challenge or attack outright when they don't think that their opponents deserve a formal challenge.
- Clan warriors usually do not gang up on single mechs (dishonorable), the Kellhounds couldn't care less.
- Clansmen only have first names until they have earned a last name (bloodname). These names are derived from the original founding members of each Clan (each Clan had around 40 founders). Here is a list of all bloodnames.
- The Kellhounds are divided into 2 regiments the 1st and 2nd.
