Because that would deny part of the game to people who don't want to pay, and introduce an imbalance between people who can/do buy those mechs, and those who do not.

( 4 in each weight class ) but they had say 2 other's in each weight class that you had to buy ( at least at launch ) then if they where to my liking then I would by them. If they allowed you to have more than one account but had to pay a one time fee to have the same name but 2 different pilots then I would go for that as well. I like the idea of cockpit or a custom HUD though.
The Mechs I would buy are :
light:
1. Wolfhound
2. Valkyrie
3. Locust
4. Panther ( for those of the combine persuasion )
Medium:
1. Assassin
2. Hatchetman ( even if the hatchetma's hatchet wasn't able to be used and was there for looks only )
3. Shadow Hawk
4. Wolverine
5. Phonenixhawk
6. Crab
7. Bushwacker ( even if it was a prototype since it was in being fielded till 3053 )
Heavy:
1. Axman ( even if the AXE wasn't a usable weapon )
2. Rifleman
3. Archer
4. Cataphract
5. Caesar
6. Warhammer
7. Grasshopper
8. Marauder
Assault:
1. Highlander
2. Victor
3. Zeus
4. Battlemaster
5. Cyclops
6. King Crab

You could think of it as buying a bigger dropship. Like instead of spending C-bills, you just straight buy it. So, it'd be a physical upgrade not just some imaginary concept like "Mech bay slots"
Also, it should be a permanent upgrade.

I hope that doesn't happen, things as important as variants should be earnable by playing as well as paying. Things like special paint schemes or logos I think are ok if some are payable only and not earnable.

Yeah, I think the devs already mentioned that you'd be able to unlock anything that you could purchase given that you put enough time into the game.

Worry not CapperDeluxe and UncleKulikov. If I am not mistaken syngyne is correct. It has already been stated that all Mechs, weapons and equipment that can be purchased with real life currency can also be purchased with in game currency. So peripherals like paint schemes, decals, Hula girls and the like will likely be the things that you can't purchase with C-bills.

As for the money I'd spend on game itself, past experience has shown that I'm far more likely to pay for cosmetic options than any other. For example, having access to parts to build a custom looking 'Mech, or special decals.

I dumped $20 on the first WoW pets and I don’t even keep them out much feels like a big waste of money.
At least I can tell myself the $15 is going to keep servers and new WoW content up.
