If I add no new heat sinks.. just the 10 my engine gives me..
and I buy Double Head Sink upgrade.
Do I get a free 40% cooling boost?
Or does the 40% boost only apply to the actual double heat sinks I install in my mech?

It applies to the deault ones in the engine too as far as I have been able to tell.
Im sure someone who knows a bit more than i do will reply with a more definite answer.

DHS applies to engine HS at double the rate, up to 250. All external heatsinks work at 1.4. Heatsinks that you put in an engine past the 250 rating (275, 300, 325 etc) count as 1.4, even though they're in the engine.
Hence, lighter 'Mechs receive more of a benefit from DHS.

You will get 100% boost. Your heat dissipation will be doubled.
Your heat cap will increase from 40 to 50 points. (you will be able to accumulate 10 more heat points before shutting down)
