Given that the entire point of the transformations (across all generations, from the original G1 designs to those from the Bay movies) was generally concealment and stealth, I would think that the majority would not actually choose BattleMechs - as rare and conspicuous as they are, in addition to being less tactically-flexible than their base forms in terms of armament - as their alternate forms.

They'd be more likely, IMO, to take the forms of the more-common conventional combat vehicles rather than BattleMechs.
