It's all about the profitability of the game in the end. If they can show a profit with whatever model they've come up with for MWO, the game will grow and more development will occur. If it doesn't show a profit, they'll have a choice between letting the game stagnate and die, or introducing more microtransaction items that will be either highly desirable or almost necessary to play, so that a large percentage of the player base buys them.
If MWO shows some of the same success as WoT, it'll be a good thing. A bad thing would be if it follows Star Wars: Galaxies.
Well you cant play effectively and enjoy game unless you pay.
edit: first thing i noticed about that game when i started it is that it asked me to pay in order to play with friends.
