As stated before, IP addresses can be spoofed. Especially if I use someone's unsecured wifi to login to do my cheating, there will be little to no consequences for my actions once I return home or find another unsecured hotspot.
That's why you ban the MAC which is a BIA (burned-in-address) on the network adapter/card or you just ban a group of IP addresses to cover a geographical location. An example being, you keep logging in from all your neighbor's unsecured wifi locations, so I as the server admin, just block all connections from the ISP node servicing your area (ie. your entire house, condo, apartment building, several adjacent neighbors).

Most of us in the US, I think, use ISP's that use dynamic IP's. They can change anytime, not that they change everyday, but they technically could.

COD - All of them
BF2/3
and many more.
They will be in the game, and we can only wait to see how they are dealth with, but unless they are banning by subnet, or mac address. IP bans can be circumvented and so can other means.
Being F2P, it won't be hard to create a new account.
It is a issue the we will have to deal with, no it isn't right/fait etc.
Maybe if PGI plans on running some sort of scan which can border on legality issues (pulling data from a user's machine).
Sadly it will happen, hopefully not like ti does on the COD/BF series.
The down side to user/player server management is the potentail for hacked servers as was the case in BF2/3 or in COD in some cases where people were able to power level or exploit.
Maybe, just maybe there will be some bit of honor among the Warriors though there will always be the Bandit/Pirates as there in Battletech so there will be here.
Maybe Merc companies will be able to get contracts from ComStar.....<shrug> to hunt said bandits, pirates.....

You could also have cheaters identified by the instance of MWO they are running. Just because the game is free doesn't mean you can't issue a key that is unique to your install. Once an offender is identified, they would need to uninstall and redownload the game to get it to function again.

+1 to this idea. If someone has to spend the hours to re-download the game because they were cheating, they'll just get bored and leave.

I talk a lot about mechwarrior to my fellow gamers. Most of them have no Idea what mechwarrior is. I show a video and they not interested.
I don't think we will have to deal with a lot of hackers...but to be safe, the key issue statement is a pretty good idea my friends

Registry keys can be edited, or files edited to bypass the key aspect.

Speaking as someone who works for an ISP, banning MAC addresses won't work very well. There's too many ways to spoof those, if a cheater cares to do so.
Banning an IP block is even worse. Again, not only are you going to run into problems with DHCP-enabled clients, but IP blocks usually aren't on that small of an area basis, so you could be banning people on different ends of a city because of what one person who lives downtown did - their only crime was sharing the same ISP. Not to mention, I hope this game survives to the advent of IPv6, which is going to open up a whole new set of IP addresses that people can access.

If the server requires a key check to log on, no, they can't be bypassed. As far as editing, you would need a keygen app to generate a key for you. That requires reverse engineering whatever kegen the devs decide to use within the game, or they could generate keys on the server side and just send them to you, making it even harder to fake keys. No keygen software on your computer means nothing to reverse engineer.
Ultimately, any security can be defeated. The trick is to make it hard enough that very few undertake the challange in the first place.

I think that also costs extra, and that's more a security thing from the player's side, to keep their accounts from being accessed.

I just hope the servers are better than WoTs. Since in order to adequately communicate shots with WoTs servers Caps Lock +0 must be used at the onset of every match even. Sounds like something out of the stone ages.
