We've got a great forum thread that goes in-depth on the technology. For more, there's the wiki at sarna.net for all your Battletech needs. An astonishing amount of novels are also out there if you want to read about some of these things in action (a lot of the earlier ones are out of print, though).

As for the system itself, you'll need a copy of Total Warfare for the 'Mech battles and A Time of War for everything else. If you want to give the game a try, there's a great virtual tabletop called MegaMek that people use to play long distance games.

Or just start reading the Blood of Kerensky trilogy. It will throw you into the universe roughly around the time we are at right now in MWO, and you'll learn fast.

If you want to get into the board game, my recomendation would be to get the Introductory Box Set. 26 miniatures, two high quality game maps, two rulebooks, one fiction "primer," a map of the Inner Sphere circa 3067 (although MWO is set in the 3050s) and a few other things, all for only $60! (plus shipping and handling) Of course, if that's too much, you could always ask for it for Christmas.

Total Warfare is the full rules, with infantry, tank, fighters, and of course, BattleMechs, but the Intro Box Set simply has the rules for BattleMechs. You could always jump in head first and buy Total Warfare, though...
A Time of War is the Battletech RPG, like Dungeons and Dragons. The difference between an RPG (like D&D for example) and a waregame (Battletech in this case) is that an RPG is more about the character and his/her stats, stuff, and freinds & enemies, while a wargame is more about tactcs. A Time of War does not have the rules for other units in it. Instead, advanced ground units are in Tactical Operations, while advanced space units are in Strategic Operations. If you want to make your own units, you need to get TechManual.

Actually, if you are like me and don't have nearly the same amount of patience for looking at charts and copying record-sheets that people apparently did in the eighties (and some still do  ), you might want to google Quick-Strike.
It's a quicker, sleeker set of rules, that still (IMO) retains that "Battletech feel", even if you do lose a bit of detail in the transition.

Wow guys thanks. I read that earlier quick synopsis post and it gave me the itch. Ive watched BT played once, but i was young and tbe people were that kind your parents tell u to stay away from... Real winners, group of like 5 living together, LIVED for the game and lost jobs, did drugs, ****** house etc... I was shoufer-ing some girl. Needless to say we didnt hook up lol. Ive always had an affinity for mechanical aspects of scifi. Which brings me to think screw trial mechs, give the newbs something they can fit however they like amd comes with an ICE. Teaches them to upgrade and use the mechlab and the weight would sure keep them limited. I wouldnt mind having one just because. Sorry this is all jumbled, im using my phone. Anyway thanks again guys.

The links and game items that others have mentioned will help you gain the knowledge of the game. After you explore the resources then you next step is to find a good merc unit to help you become a good or excellent mechwarrior. I am part of a merc unit called Blackthornes. Our website is www.blackthornes.com.

Another great place to start is http://bg.battletech.com/

Especially the "New to Battletech?" page, which has quickstart rules to download for free.
