My favorite ere is 3039 because new tech is just coming out and you see the effects of limited availability so clearly. So when it comes to modifying designs, I won't unless I find them completely unusable. If i do modify, it will be as little as possible
Modify, Redesign, Repurpose

I like the idea of re-purposing.... I imagine that the devs have something in the works to make you pay for the new/extra weapons.
That being said I'm sure I'll be POed when a Catapult runs up and shoots me with an AC20.
All in all I think that repurposing will keep everyone on their toes.

Lazer boats, all I want to play.
I do not like the fetter of an ammo can, which can also explode. I much prefer the simplicity of heatsinks and lazers. The right shooting configuration will allow you to fire aften while staying in a safe heat range.
Until they release the Ostroc, Ostsol, Black Knight, and or any other pure energy mech. Ima refit everything for all energy.

Your ignoring the Hardpoint system, as you have to find a variant of the Catapult that has balistic hardpoints to even consider mounting a AC 20, much less two of them. Same thing with the Dragon. Your either putting both Gauss in the right arm (which will not fit) or finding a variant that has multiple balistic hardpoints that can mount them and has the space for them. They have also said that if you have a mech without jump jets, you can not add jump jets to it... just to give you an idea.
I agree I want to do all 4 options, specially in beta. But the one thing we can not do is truily create a 'custom' mech. You can not create hardpoints for a mech. This is a limit, but a limit I can work with. It is to prevent truily broken builds.
Some of the screenshots we've seen reveal that the K2 has two balistic hardpoints in both the left and the right torso. May not have enough CritSlots though

I generally tend to only modify, though there are times when the occasion calls for more. Stripping down and rebuilding a battlemech may be necessary to shape it to your personal preferences or specifications. Additionally, completely re-purposing a mech can make it much more effective in your hands, or simply be fun.

Honestly I fall into all 3 categories simply because I tend to have ideas for mechs that fall withing all of them.
