I'm relatively new to the BT universe/story, although I was introduced to MW a long time ago. I've recently been getting my hands on fiction and studying the lore. It's amusing because whenever I find a 'Mech I'm unfamiliar with in a story, I'll hop onto the BT wiki and look it up so I can properly envision it.

That said, how many 'Mechs do you know by heart? I suspect the BT/MW vets have a much better time picturing them when they see a name on the page.

It wasn't until Dark Age first came out that I met mechs I didn't recognize, and then the TRO came out, and I knew them all again.

I studied the TROs/scenario packs/compendium for almost the entire 1990s. I could probably name the readouts of every mech from 2750-3058 without any trouble. Though I have gotten a bit rusty over the past 12 years, and never really got into the post Operation Bulldog/Task force Serpent stuff (ie. the Jihad and beyond) though since the MWO announcement I am catching up ^_^.

Pretty much anything before TR 3060. Never got into the boardgame, but I've read all the books, played the cardgame, the damn heroclix thing, own all the videogames (3 is still one of my all time favourites and I play megamek with myself while watching TV). Sarna.net is pretty good for finding some of the more obscure stuff, or what book what mech models are in.

Started Playing back in 93 right after the clan invasion. Could probably name a large number of them up until the Jihad, then they started messing things up and lost interest. Now I have started to teach my son. What a game. pretty much did the board game on up.

Yeah, I'm the same way. Can't for the life of me figure out what's going on in MW:DA, but up to the Jihad I'm probably pretty good, with exception of maybe a few of the lesser known Star League models that the Com Guards trotted out.

It took a lot of effort to figure out why the Jihad occurred (and what it was). I read several MWDA novels before I decided to buy the Jihad sourcebook and get a subscription to the Battlecorp website. They have some novelettes which chronicle what happened in 3067. I won't spoil it for you, but it is a continuation from almost right after where "Endgame" left off.

Having not played the ClickyTech game and read only a few of the novels, I'm not very familiar with some of the Dark Age 'Mechs that haven't appeared by 3090, which I suppose I'll get to know after TRO:3150 comes out. Besides those, I think I know the majority of the units, especially the ones that show up more often.

Well my first experience with BT was the boardgame, I think 2nd edition. It came with little cardboard playing pieces with pictures of Mechs on them, pretty much all the unseen models. Once I found out about all the sourcebooks and TRO's, well I got nearly all of them, only stopped around the Jihad area (kinda torqued with the whole FedCom as a plot device for a civil war.) I can probably recognize most designs (plus the vehicles ;)) not to mention Aerospace fighters (love the Stuka.) Hell I still remember the very first MW game, just because you got to pilot all of the unseen. BT gets in the blood i think  .

Physical recognition is easy for me with 2750 - 3050 designs, but I'm fuzzy around 3055 - 3057 because they were just ugly.
I know of a few 3067 designs. Jihad to Dark Age I know pretty well because some were just facelifts of older designs and the newer ones are quirky enough for me to remember.

Actual designs I only remember the Invading Clans omnis because I've played the Bears for so long.

I know the majority by name and can ID them when I see them.

I know most of the TRO 3050, 3055 and 3058 designs by heart (mostly the Clan mechs).

What is considered "By heart"? If you mean just reciting names off the top of my head, I can probably match (or top) the post above me. If you mean recognizing the art, it's still quite a few - may take me a minute, though. If you mean having the loadout memorized... Just a few (Adder Prime, Spider, Stalking Spider, maybe one or two others) I'm sorry to say.
