I was just looking through some of my old screenshots back when the client was still 'launcher.exe'... And they look way better than the game does now.
The older CryEngine 3 version ran smoother and looked better.

Wish I had screenshots that had more parity in what they displayed, but you can't always have that.

i think it was mostly the blurr effect in closed beta. they also reduced damage glow, per request of the community lol (peronally i thought it was fine (and cooler) before)

but also, when they change the Mechs colors from what it was to the default green to allow color customization. Some fidelity and highlight was lost from the mech models, as well as some added grit and grime. take catapault for example

it was glorious

i mean its okay now, it just looks a lot dirtier covers up some of the fidelity. low rez dirt on high rez model? who knows

DX11 has not been implemented yet. Most, if not all, of the visual improvements will not be seen until DX11 is released.

It didn't look better imo, it just had way more ugly blur.

Still has way too much blurring.

No.

IMO, the game looks much better now. The game's performance took a bit of a hit, but the last patch saw some improvment for me, and hopefully we'll have more next patch.

Looking forward to what DX11 will bring as well.

Far as I'm concerned, back in closed beta the lighting and shadowing was much better (apart from the lack of walking shadows), the motion blur actually worked and while DoF isn't any better than it is now, the MLAA/FXAA implementation was much better. The current game looks almost like an Unreal Engine title.
Plus some of the new textures on the 'mechs for paint compatibility are ridiculously low in quality.

I rather enjoy the game than be overly concerned with what the graphics look like (i'm from the 8-bit game era, where gameplay was more important).

Things look and run smoother for me, for the most part, compared to CB.

The Textures on the mechs were a lot "better" before the 3.4 update; but hard to put my finger on it. Before the first adjustments, the mechs almost looked cell-shaded... but look more or less fine now.

Environmental effects and weapon effects and such are way better now than before; but yes, mechs seem "less shiny" or something. Again, hard to really describe what changed.

So they turned down the bloom?

anyway, I much prefer the new mech textures simply on the fact that they went back and rebaked/re set up smoothing groups on the mechs so as to remove those nasty shading errors that were on those first 8 or so mechs. so imo between the guy repainting the spec maps so they weren't this weird comic book dot pattern all over it, as seen in the first image, to something looking more representative of thick painted worn in metal walking tanks, and rebaking the normals, things on that side look way better.

Having said that the one thing you may have noticed is that the diffuse maps are now 1/4 of the resolution as they once were.

What will probably happen after this next patch that the dragon, awesome and hunch will no longer have 2048 diffuse maps when they get redone. Like what they did to all the other textures that have been redone to this point. they will be reduced to 1024s I bet. But it's a necessity really, their new material set up is more complex, they have all been given gloss maps and an RGB blend map, and the games vram usage is already at 1GB, which is very high considering 8v8 and some maps not really all that cluttered..

What is probably not what you mean, but they took away the old skins/textures. I miss the glowing eyes on the non-Founder Atlai.

No it wasn't. It was a blurry mess most of the time.

DX11 will help as well as finally getting the optimizations into CryEngine 3.4 so that we can turn our settings back up.

It looked, better, but they toned down the graphics of models a lot to achieve better optimalisation.

It depends, though - I remember a few graphic glitches from CB that have since been addressed/improved, sooo... it's a mixed bag.

There are lots of things that this game still needs as far as visuals are concerned:

- Destructible environments
- Antialiasing (either through force-apply or embedded FXAA)
- High-rez textures
- Less bloom, more HDR
- More gritty effects like dust, dirt, and the sort
- Better depth of field

Basically everything that the latest CryEngine build has to offer. (Check YouTube or the CryEngine site for tech demo vids.)

I'm hopeful, though...

EDIT: Can't believe I forgot... yes, it also needs DirectX 11. If you're a gamer still playing on Windows XP, time for you to move on with the times. Windows 7 is actually stable and lets you properly play DX11 games. If you're okay with DX9, that's cool too, but don't bring the rest of us down because you refuse to move on.
