Q: How will the player’s initial ‘mech(s) be selected?

A: Players will get 1 free mech to start. They can chose from 4 1 in each class – light, med, heavy, assault. [BRYAN]

A: You will be able to choose from a selection based on the role you want to play. [RUSS]

So from what Bryan said, my guess is that we will be offered:

Commando
Cicada
Dragon
Awesome

All of which are the bottom mech in each weight class. They each have a lot of customisation options including mixing up energy, ballistic and missile load outs.

But what about Russ' comment about the role selection? Will this effect the variants? Or will it be a completely different selection of mechs?

Thoughts people?

I think I will need a bit more information on the game economy. I want my first mech to be the mech with the most earning potential.

Well if WoT is anything to go off that will be the mediums.

The Cicada seems a poor choice, it is not well representative of what Medium mechs usually do. I would expect Jenner/Hunchback/Catapult/Awesome(maybe Atlas?) based on being closer to the idealized loadout and role for each weight class.

I keep forgetting the Commando can run nearly 100 kmh though ;)

Hoping the medium choice is a centurion do not need two recon mechs as starters.

How is the catapult an idealised loadout and the dragon isnt?

I'm thinking growing room for us to get used to the class.

These are STARTER mechs ... right?

I agree the Centurion would be a wonderful mech to start with. Love the look and load-out. I hope that's one of the 4 ... not sure I am that lucky though! :(

I'm really not sure what I'd pick out of ANY of the 'Mechs currently released. It's not that I'm not grateful and don't think they look good, they're just none of the 'Mechs which I've always been super excited for. :)

I think if forced to pick....I would go for either a Commando or a Dragon.

Why would they rotate them? I mean they haven't suggested such a thing.

I would prefer the Dragon, but the Catapult seems a bit simpler and is the classic LRM platform. I would prefer the Centurion over the Hunchback as well, but my money is on Jenner/Hunchback/Catapult/Atlas which were also the first four mechs produced for playtesting.

I have never been a fan of the Jenner, cicada, hunchback, dragon, catapult or atlas.

BUT

The commando looks funky and I LOVE the look of the Centurion.

And if I wanted to go for an Assault I'd choose the Awesome most days.

I would hope that your starter set is influenced by your House allegiance. Not sure how to square that with mercs and lone wolves...

Didn't they say in the tweet chat that mechs will not be restricted to house affiliation. But C-Bill cost will vary depending on your allegiance.

Might just let you pick based off of who you're currently working for, then again none of us know how thats set up so I would take what I said with a grain of salt lol.

I'd say medium will be Hunchback and heavy will be Catapult. Cicada is more of a heavy scout than true medium and Dragon is heavy medium and a light/medium 'mech hunter than traditional heavy.

I could possibly go with the idea of the catapult over the dragon, but I think if they don't go for a Cicada then the next logical choice is the Centurion. The hunchback is too much of specialised brawler.

... the 4 mechs they have in game, would in my guess be the ones they launch as a starting mech, they would have the most play time, the most bugs ironed out, so it makes sense to make them the starter mechs.

I believe that you are correct.

My guess is the starter mechs will rotate dependant upon your house allegiance. Not to restrict anyone but to add a little more variety of mechs in-game.
