Untill very recently I was an extensive WoT player, and if you didn't know; you work your way down tech trees to get the best tanks. Now, from what I've read so far; it seems that we will get to start with money to buy what ever mech or just get one free mech to start? (I'm not 100% on this.) So, my question is... What am I working towards? If I say Atlast is my favorite, and I can just get it immediately and in a few hours have it set up exactly how I want; what am I doing now? Just getting more mechs? To generalize; what am I actually griding for in this game besides money for more mechs?

They've said in developers' posts that territory will change hands. I'd say "endgame" is up to the individual. From the little that's been posted so far about it, there doesn't seem to be a theoretical limit on the territorial change possibilities... maybe New Syrtis will finally end up in that green section of the map at some point for example. :)

As the game progresses, new chassis, weapons, and other tech will start appearing. So immediately you can make your ideal design with what is available. But new tech will allow you to upgrade as you go.

As far as I know anyway

From the sounds of it, on launch/start/creation of a new game account, everyone will have access to FOUR starter Mechs, one for each Weight Class (Light Medium Heavy Assault). Whether or not they'd have to buy them, I don't know. Logic would dictate they'd be free else you'd end up with accounts with 0 C-Bills and no Mechs or something, somehow. All other Mechs will need to be unlocked by increasing Mech XP and such. Keep in mind also that every stock model of Mech will have ~4 sub-variants capable of different kinds of fits.

I do have to agree with you this is maybe slightly just a tiny bit worrying especially considering the game will be launching with only like 10 Mechs or something. That is going to become fairly old fairly fast, so I hope Piranha is up to the task of releasing new content on a very regular basis. However it's important to note their advancement tree is nothing like WoT. Well, actually, it's a LITTLE like WoT but not really. WoT has very limited, linear advancement -- there are very, very few Tanks that actually have plausible armament options and most of the time it's simply a linear advance up the Tech Tree to the best tank of your preferred type (Heavy, Medium, TD, Arty). MWO will have much, much more emphasis on customization to suit different playstyles, which is why they're making it possible to access the heavies and assault mechs right off the bat. I'm sure there will be a lot of people who's first urge is to get in the biggest, most bad-*** assault Mech they can, but Piranha has adamantly maintained that they are putting every effort into balancing the game so that Lights and Mediums remain critically important and effective Mechs compared to Heavies and Assaults.

Why does every game need an 'end game'? *** happened to just playing?

The Idea isn't that you unlock new mechs, but that you unlock more and more capabilities for a mech you want to pilot. You will have a tree of perks that you can unlock as you gain experience ona particular chassis. So, for example, you could log tons of hours in an awesome, and eventually manage heat in that mech more effectively, and fire those ppcs more often than somebody who just bought it.

you start with one free mech (chosen from one of each class). No clue which four they will be, so your favorite may not be on the list. If the starter Asault mech is an Awesome, and you want an Atlas, then you already have a clear goal: Get that Atlas!

There will also be more variants you may wish to try to achieve.

Don't forget the Mechlab! For many players, constantly playing with the Mechlab to make new builds will be a big part of the game. your stock Atlas may be nice, but the Mechlab will let you customize it further to suit how you want to play (and you'll need to earn Cbills to buy those new parts)

There is also two different kinds of XP trees to progress, each mech you own (and each variant) has a mech efficiency tree you'll need to build up, gaining XP specifically for that chassis to improve torso twist, acceleration, better heat dissipation, faster startup/shutdown, jump jet efficiency.. And then so it all over again in the next Atlas variant. completing all the efficiency trees for all variants unlocks yet more bonuses.

Then maybe you want a Scout mech for those days you don't want to pilot your Atlas. Do all of that all over again for a Raven instead.

Then you have the pilot XP skill tree, which lets you define your role on the battlefield. You can pick up and improve abilities, plus unlock the ability to deploy modules which grant new specialized skills (Such as the Command role tree allowing access to air strikes and satellite imagery)

Also you will gain progress with your House, unlocking new ranks and cosmetic items, and fighting to increase your House's total standing in the sector.

Then there will be new mechs, new maps, new game types being added.

Enough yet? Then in a year or so the Clans invade, and who knows what will happen then!

I don't need an endgame, I just need a game.

He who dies with the most toys wins.

Sure you want money to modify your ride, but I have a feeling getting the 'mech you want tricked out the way you want is just one small goal. Really, rising through the faction ranks or building your merc corp to be one of the best in the IS is what I think the vast majority of players on the forums is mostly interested in.

Obviously !
You join a party of 12 level 80 tanks, clerics and wizards and go into a dungeon to slay a dragon...i mean Natacha Kerensky in a Timberwolf.

Applying "endgame" to MW:O seems.....like someone plays too much MMO or games of the like.

Pilot levels might make it easier to do certain things, but having a maxed pilot =/= endgame. You log in, strap in a mech, and go shoot people, profit.

There are a lot of deep trees to progress, plus progressing your House, it will take a long time to max out a mech, max out all the variants to get that juicy elite II bonus, and max your pilot role warfare skills, and trick out the mechlab for each of those variants to make them kick even more as.

and by then there will be new mechs!

Maxing your skills does not = end-game, but it does equal progress, and you'll have to work at it to complete that progress, even if you start the game on day 1 with the mech you want there is a lot to do to improve!

What is the endgame of chess, or soccer?

What is the endgame of games like Counter Strike or DotA?

Well, you can always try out new mechs, but unlocking everything just for the sake of unlocking? That's principle of pets doing something stupid like sitting down for the sake of some more food... -_-

Well obviously the "real" endgame is did you have fun playing? I'm not worried about that; I know this will be fun. I was simply using "endgame" loosely in the sense that tier X is such in WoT, and that's what you work toward.

That's *my* endgame.

I had read this as well and I envision this having simularities to WW2online where you fight for each area moving on to the next area until one side or the other controls the majority of the map which then would be reset / restarted to a neutral map. In the end it's all about having fun and bragging rights.
