The big question for me: How will the battles be set up?

I'm worried it's going to be something like World of Tanks where you just hit play and get thrown on a random map. Is there any word on whether there will be objectives, buildings to control, etc or just TDM? Having tactical objectives is one of the core experiences of MW, in my opinion. It could work really well in this setup if done right, especially if the maps are on a fairly large scale. Since they are making a big deal out of recon and command roles, I hope we are looking at something bigger and more interesting than 8v8 deathmatches.
Being able to take control of a sensor station, turrets, and other things like in MechCommander would be sweet as well. Really, I always thought a MechCommander MMORTS would be the greatest thing ever.

I play WoT and I know what you mean. Its great as a quick thrill sort of game but it does not have the longevity to keep me enthralled. I hope that MW:O will have an instant match element like WoT but also include something like the WoT clan wars. With one very important difference: We will be on contract to one of the major houses. And all our victories will be credited to that house, not ourselves.
Much as the global domintation thats being designed for End of Nations looks like.
I have to say though that I hope there is a PvE element to the game. Mission running like EvE. Get a lance together and contact your agent and off you go.

Agreed ... If there is a random match element there should also be a random objective included.
Capture weapon facility and hold it (both teams are raiders and want the same base)
raid industrial complex (both teams start away from Indi complex)
take out orbital gun (timed assault/defend)
eliminate enemy forces prior to drop ship arrival (timed match)
escort missions (get your vip mech warrior out of the combat zone)
Etc etc

This. I've seen plenty of games that have a global map that clans can fight over. What ends up happening is a handful of super clans get most of the territory and sit on it while reaping the rewards and having scripted battles with eachother so the status quo isn't upset. All the while the smaller clans can't even get their foot in the door.

Maybe get rid of this and keep it at the same time like Diablo 2 did sort of. Like Ladder and Non-Ladder. Just give us the option to choose. In for a dogfight or fighting a war of epic scale with a bunch of nerds around you.

Be prepared for it being as simple as a 12 v 12 match, with the ability to re-join with your other mechs, up to say a max of 4. Once everyones mechs are done, your side loses.
I have said in many posts. This forum could be on fire in August due to the number of people who are buying founders and still don't have much information. It is going to create regret.
I have a thread open now with a vote on how much people like PvP. 10% of votes are people who are not crazy about PvP. Obviously mech fans. But does that mean they will hold back their complaints if they find it is just too much PvP for them? We'll see.

MPBT was just deathmatch. From what they've said in the videos and interviews, MWO is currently basically a dual Take'n'hold scenario, where extermination works as a secondary victory condition.
I'm still hoping for something a bit more than that in the future. I assume there will be, else they would have just implemented another Solaris version and called it a day.

And once again, the ugly head of rampant assumptions rears up. How do you expect a game like this to be set up like an RTS? And even then, who is going to be the person shuffling all of the separate forces around? This game model will not work like EvE Online does. It simply cannot. The game is centered around combat and customizing your 'Mech, increasing down-time between matches will only detract from the core experience. Most of your rime is going to be spent in random matches. I expect that eventually modes will be added where Houses fight each other and battles for planets ensue in a persistent game map, although those battles will probably be scheduled, because you cannot expect every player to be online 24/7, after all!
Look at the pictures of the Mechlab in the media section. Do you see that big 'LAUNCH' button in the upper right? I expect that launches you into a random match, not to float around some kind of galactic map and wait whatever planet you please. Hell, what do you think would happen to the game if you had 10,000 wannabe Hanse Davions running around trying to conquer every world they can attack? The game would become a mess. Honestly, the less freedom players have to screw with the universe, the better.

well, the question was how the battles are going to be set up...and in MPBT they were set up by choosing a battlefield from the map and jump into that battlefield to hold it (if its yours) or conquer it....the battle itself was pure TDM, i know...

Not sure what "like an RTS" means, but I certainly expect a meta game similar to what NBT-HC had.

Whoever leads a particular unit gets to pick what to attack/defend from a list that depends on unit affiliation and current political situation in game.

Thank god. I doubt anybody here wants another fly-the-spreadsheet game.

If core experience is "fight random people on random maps in battles that serve no apparent purpose", it will get boring very quickly. Besides, we already have MWLL for people who like that sort of a game.

Initially - yes, due to the fact that meta game part has been delayed. After that - no way, won't even get close to 50%.

I think the word from devs was that it will be added within 3 months from release.
