Wow, you guys fit an AC/20 on a Flame? Never thought to try that because they are so heavy. I like AC/20s. They're nasty.

Yup, you have to use an STD engine but you can get away with a 275 or 280 with speed tweak and still hit 81 kph and it can be done with a 300 if you don't mind losing some leg armor, AMS, a heat sink or two, or using some SL instead of ML.

I have three build that I made but I just wanted some input on them. My play style is generalist with variety of different weapons; I need at least one of each type energy, missile and ballistics.

I went with a similar build to you Todo. The medium pulse lasers are awesome and fit my play style really well. I'd dump some of the MG ammo though. Way more than you need.

Here's my build.

2 kind of build I use :

Laser type:
2 Large Pulse
2 MedPulse
XL300
AMS
endo
400 armor
DHS (put as many as possible)

You can shot LRG pulse in a row many time before heating
Warning : short range , mean its best in close range fight ; its a wonderful light killer as Pulse hit fast , no need maintain laser long.
With the recent boost to pulse laser, that variant is doing great.

2 LRG Pusle on key 1
2 Med on key 2

Classic build :

1 gauss / 4 ammo
2 med Laser
2 Med Pulse
AMS
Endo
402 armor
DHS
XL300

40 gauss shots will last you a full 12 vs 12, less then that and you burn all ammo fast.
I removed the SRM and put med pulse (handy vs light and it does 1 more dmg then a med las) for better alpha.

Put gauss on fire key 1
2 med laser on 2
2 pulse on 3

it help managing heat.

Full disclosure: I only really play PUG's.

I seem to recall someone posting a similar build, but I have seen most success in the Flame with this:

http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=56&l=1efaa93610cb87a98b80231390c5893112843c3d

The negatives:
- requires learning the timing on the UAC/5 to prevent jams
- less armor in the arms and legs than max
- a ton less UAC ammo than I'd like

The positives:
- solid trading power at all ranges
- all ammunition tucked away in relative safety with C.A.S.E.
- nice distribution of power between weapon systems/locations
- extremely mobile/dextrous

This build (like many dragon builds I imagine) does not really shine until you elite the chassis, as the 2x bonus on acceleration, decelleration, turning, etc. really make the difference between getting in some harass without reprecussions and eating a few salvos in CT.

I now routinely get over 600 damage in a match, which is a lot for me as I am not very good. A variant I'd like to try would be with an XL 350 traded for more armor or additional ammunition.

IMO best Flame build is:

gauss+4t ammo +4xML+XL340

sure u can fit std300 AC20+3t ammo and 4xML but with that big or even HUGE CT u really want have that speed. 100kph with tweak its really nice and helpfull and ac20 and 4ml runs really HOT. I preffer gauss build, u have ur weapon placed really high in ur ST and its easy to snipe without showing enemy entire mech so gauss range its usefull and u have 40 shots.

If you're going to run a PPC or ERPPC you should look at the dragon 1C, which has identical hardpoints to the Flame but two energy slots up in the torso for better PPC sniping.

My current build:
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...cce3d8e65c19393
XL340, AC10, 4ML, LRM10. 3 tons AC10 ammo, 2 tons LRM10 ammo. Fire LRMs until exhausted, pepper with AC/10, then close in and kill while you have high mobility and strong armor on weakened foes using remaining AC10 ammo and 4ML's.

One of my best builds:
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...5a7058a135697f2
Came in 15th place in the first heavy vs the world tournament, peaked at 7th with this build.
XL300, 15 DHS, 2 LL, 2 ML, 1 UAC5.

XL and Gauss is LRM bait.

After messing with the Flame since it came out I cannot find anything that beats the AC20, 4 x MLas with STD300 config. The raw damage output is a horrinble thing for any mech you can flank. Expect a good deal of one hit side torso kills on XL mechs.

Agreed on XL/Gauss. I stopped running that the first weekend Jagers came out after being 1-shot about 3-4 games in a row.

The AC20 / 4ML build is definitely fun, but I save that for my phract 3D because of jumpjets :D

I just started my Dragons. I opened with a 1C. Since I have the 1C why would I get a flame? They have the same exact hardpoints just positioned differently.

The energy hardpoints are all grouped nicely together in the arms and the ballistic has a higher mount on the torso. It plays just a little easier. Other than that, they are the same.

Virtually a full year after I posted my last post in this thread the only viable build I have is AC20, STD300, 4 ML. That said, it's pretty great in the current meta.

Since they went on sale I decided to pick one up. I am looking to equip it with:

Gauss + 2x ammo
Medium Lasers x4
Streak with 1/2 ton ammo

This build has a 360 xl engine. Since I can not out slug a Timberwolf I wanted to make sure I out run one.

Thoughts?

The missile hardpoint is largely useless. You can use it to troll with a NARC or LRM10, but good builds skip it entirely.

Gauss+4xML with XL350 or XL360 (depending on what ammo/cooling vs speed situation you prefer) is really solid. It gives you easy ridge peeking ability with good up-close firepower. Take 3 or 4 tons of ammo. Learn to draw and fire the rifle while running for extra brawling fun.

AC20+4xML with STD300 works as a brawler. It is not recommended until you learn to twist like a madman, because the huge CT will get you killed fast otherwise. Take at least 3 tons of ammo, 4 if you tend to fire outside of optimal range.

There are also various all-energy-arms setups that utilize the extreme arm reach of the Dragon. You can take 4xLL, 2xLPL+2xMPL, even 4xPPC. Use engines from XL300 to XL350, again depending on cooling vs speed preference.

I have been having a lot of success with this build lately, even after the PPC nerf.
