Some Thoughts On The Everlasting Ssrm Debate

31 January 2013 - 07:49 AM

Hi everyone.

I have read a lot of threads debating the SSRM weapons system and its balance compared to other weapons. Much of the threads are obviously flavored by enraged scout pilots or by pilots beeing confronted by ECM scouts carrieng SSRMs.

I tryed to compare the mechanic of SSRMs in MWO, in TT and how a hypotetical weapon system would work in reallife.

This are my thoughts:

I see several possible approaches to get the SSRM more in Line to the other weapons.

-- Increase their time to lock on. In TT it is as hard to hit with SSRMs as it is with SRMs. The only difference is the SSRM Launcher won't fire if the pilot wasn't able to achieve a solide lock on. SRMs fire always. ( so basicaly you are wasting amo on SRM lauchers and you won't on SSRMs.)

-- Break lockon after every salvo. In TT you have to target every shoot seperately. And it would be only logical. The Missles are transfered from your ammo bay into the laucher and then be activated and locked on target.
This has to be done for every salvo.

-- Make SSRMs line of sight targetable ONLY. Every obstacle getting between the targeting mech and the target should break the lock.
Jumping Mechs or Mechs with high turn rates will now be able to break the SSRMs lock mor easiely.

Thats only three of them. They won't make SSRMs worthless but would increase the downsides of a weapon that NEEDS time to lock on instead of beeing just fired at will.

None of this proposals will be the ideal solution but a mix of them may be.
