Can you afford it?
Yes = buy it
No = Don't

Just because you can afford it doesn't really mean it's a good buy in particular.
Plus a lot of people interested in buying a founders package might not be privy to the requirements of the beta test. On top of this a founders package can run the cost of a (or several) price dropped games, or up to two new release titles. Having to choose between the lesser of two evils many people would rather and can more easily justify buying new games, rather than dropping cash for a beta. That said any fan who has the disposable income to buy a founders package might be well served to do so, and will more than likely do it.

There are a few things to consider with the founders packages.
Number one would do you want the in game perks, such as 80/40 dollars worth of in game currency? 1-3 months premium access? Founders Mechs(special custom mechs from what I understand, but I have no practical knowledge of what makes founders mechs special)? If you answered yes to any of that then buy the appropriate founders package for what you want, or you can afford.

The other question is... Do you want access to the closed beta that badly? Keep in mind that the closed beta requires you to agree to terms of use, and a Non-Disclosure Agreement. Closed Betas aren't just about playing the game, in a beta test you're also trying your best to find ways in which the game malfunctions, so you can report those sort of issues to the developers. The whole reason of being for beta tests are to work out the bugs before releasing a finished product. A beta test which may contain unfinished content, and may not have implemented most content yet. So it's really a trade off. You have a responsibility as a tester to find bugs and problems, then report them, and how to replicate them. This is once again so the developer can find them, hunt down the malfunctioning code, and eliminate the issue. That doesn't mean you can't have fun playing the game, but you're also responsible for keeping a keen look out for problems.

So armed with that information, it's up to you to decide weather or not that's right for you.

No such thing as Timber Wolf II. Mad Cat Mk II has been manufactured by a different Clan from Timber Wolf, under that very IS-inspired name.

Also - Sunder, mr. Potato "iconic"? I think... that's a bit too much to say.

A lot of people who were introduced to battletech through Mech Warrior games knew the sunder long before they knew the Atlas. As MW3 was pretty popular, and later installment seemed to lack the fallowing of 3. I always thought the Sunder had that sort of Clan-Esque look like the Hellbringer's and Summoner's disowned big brother.

Not officially named as such, does not mean no such thing, it means there's a misnomer related to it. Either way it's still the timber wolf's successor, it looks like one, and it acts like one so therefore it is one. Just because Clan Diamond Shark built it as a money making idea, doesn't mean it's not essentially more of the same. As a spiritual successor who cares if the name is "wrong," Mad Cat MK II is just as wrong because "Mad Cat" is a misnomer for Timber Wolf, caused by a targeting computer being unable to correctly identify the 'mech.

Too bad for you the FRR would never hire a bunch money-hungry mercs <_<

You can't say never when you've already done it... Revolutions and Independence wars scream merc involvement. But that's okay, keep your oh so smug point of view. Just don't expect me to cry any tears when the clans wipe your uppity ******* off the galactic map.

The Atlas is the symbol of the assault class, there is probably no more identifiable 'mech in all of the mechwarrior universe.  The original zombie 'mech and one of the toughest machines ever to trundle across a battlefield.  Not only it's toughness, but also the sheer firepower available on this death-giver is frightening.  Anything that mounts armor that nearly weighs as much as a Locust, and weaponry nearly as heavy as a medium machine is plain crazy.
Um... Timber Wolf(MadCat), Timber Wolf II, Sunder, and Dire Wolf are far more iconic 'mechs. Especially to people who were introduced with Mechwarrior games and not the table top game.
