How I Can Get The Best Experience From Mwo?

Not sure if this topic goes here; I hope so.
While it's been a /long/ time since I played BattleTech (ummm 1986 anyone?) and I've enjoyed the MWO Beta and Trial Mechs, I really want to get the most out of this game. I really like the game!
* Do I need to join a Faction?
* What's a good first/trainer mech a person should buy?
* Where can I relearn about the Mechs, their armaments, and such? While I don't really want to get stat crazy I'd like to know the difference between the weapon types and when their use is appropriate over another weapon type - tatics, I guess.
* While there's no in-game VOIP, is there a Teamspeak Server (or other VOIP solution) folks jump on when playing?
That's all the questions I have for now. Sorry if they're answered in other locations; feel free to point me in their direction(s).
Cheers! And watch your heat...

Id stick in the medium to heavy range for starter mech.
Joining a Merc Unit is a definite must.
You're always welcome to use our teamspeak and drop with our guys. (Info is in my signatue below)

@Krellek, thank you for the suggestions. I might be missing something but it appears the stickied posts have become, shall we say, a bit repetative and light on the info. I haven't look at the command chair forums, yet.

@Wolfclaw, Thanks for the TS info and invite. Also, thanks for the link to sarna.net; I'll check that out after I get some sleep.
And I plan on visiting the Faction Forums but do you have any pointers/suggestions/opinions?
Again, thanks for the excellent feedback.

Do a search for smurfy (this is a mech lab website to help you build your mechs without spending money, and also has spreadsheets with info on the weapons and equipment).
http://mwomercs.com/...33#entry1459833
Also search for Ohm or Ohmwrecker, he has a spreadsheet to the weapons and equipment - invaluable info
http://mwomercs.com/...s-excel-inside/
Factions are currently preference, many are still lone wolf. Factions will come into play in the next 4-6 months (maybe more) when community warfare is released.
Joining a unit, or even just getting on TeamSpeak will help loads. Lots of people that are happy to help with the game, and with mech builds etc. The 2 primary servers i play on are Comstar NA and NGNG. You can forum search those also to get the TS addresses and passwords.

For a unit to look into - check my signature
or check out the Outreach forum

In the meantime, welcome to MWO and Happy Hunting!

Get a good headset and join the popular servers found here http://mwomercs.com/...e-chat-servers/
Faction don't do anything right now except a little tag. Tactics are too big of an issue for a simple answer, but watch NGNGTV http://www.youtube.c...oGutsNoGalaxyTV and look how they run their mechs and tactics.
Many players recommend the HBK 4SP as the first starter mech, but it is not suitable for everyone. If you want more speed or more armor or more guns, there are other options.

Redshift2k5, I appreciate the information. Guess I'm researching the HBK 4SP. :-D
Thanks, again; Watch your heat!

Joining a Merc unit in a team based game if you are going to be a consistent and religous player, is a must to actually win more often...

Best experience is to play the mech of your choice with weapons payload of your choice. Personally, I will go on TS and chat with the people in the team and become friends with them rather than joining once particular group but that's just me.
