So...two additions to your theory. Both from the "hell of a stretch"-category, but...well, this is a conspiracy theory, isn't it?

Just had a couple of games where our entire 8 man team was dropped against 3 different teams in the space of 90 seconds. We had Alpine for about 30 seconds then we got dropped on Frozen city then 30 seconds after that we got dropped in Forest Colony Snow!
Why is this relevant and not just a very random bug? Well...matchmaking is obviously an automated process and integrating a lance of Clan Mechs is probably not as easy as just dropping with 4 Clan Mechs (and got more complicated thanks to Elo, because the Clan Mech-Players would rise through the ranks too fast).
And...if you want to make a point with your PR stunt, you have to make it right. One way would be to just use a lot of players in clan mechs to make sure most players actually encounter them.
The other way - and the way I think is more likely - would be to target specific players who can spread the word (Twitch.tv-streamers (->7.)) and well known players, for example the volunteer moderators, the tournament winners or closed beta players).
And the easiest way to grab these players? Well, just like it happened to Father Dougal....wait till they drop and then take them and their team to a different game (on a completely new map for max effect) with the clan mechs waiting for them.
And if you do something like this, if you fiddle with an automated process like our matchmaking...you have to test this and that's what happened to Father Dougal. You don't want to kill the system, do you?
And 7.) would obviously be that fairly unsuccesful search for Twitch.tv users during the "Be a Hero"-challenge.
Is it unlikely? Yes. Is it insane? Yeah. Is it impossible? No. Just remember all the Valve-ARGs or even the extremely insane Payday: The Heist-Counterfeit Secret...so, let's hope this is true
