I don't know if this is it per se, but it's definately something that needs to be re-worked to get more players in on the fluff system I think. Here's my thoughts on it.

Have a scheme similar to the paints.
C-bill items - generic looking items with few selections
Basic MC - static models, cheap, and a lot of them
Standard MC - light up maybe a simple movement, maybe upgraded versions of the basics
Premium MC - Pretty much what you currently have, bobble heads, holograms, and so forth.
Time/Count Limited MC - Same system as you run now with special offers at higher prices.

The problem a lot of players have is with the cost for fluff, there's no entry level and less options for variation/making the customization their own.

You could also work out ways to modify many sitting cockpit items to hanging to cut down on development time, same as modifying the basics into more elaborate levels of items. It really shouldn't by any means take a person long at all to crank out a good base set of models to thicken out this system with items.

Speculating on a good price is probably hard, but I'd go cheap enough people will just buy bunches. A guess would be Basic - 50-75/100 MC, Standard - 100-150MC, Premium 200-250MC, Special - 250-500MC

Lots of things suggested that would fill this out in the What would I pay for thread -
Coffee mug, ash tray, lava lamps, pictures, snow globes, mini mechs just to name a few I remember off the top of my head.

Bumping due to the 30+ polls posted yesterday. Shall we discuss this further?
