Currently trying to get the 5K up, but it's a painful slog when you basically only get XP for damage and kills.

Fixed that for you.

I love the 5V. 2MPLs are enough to do plenty of damage if you know how and those 12 JJs are just pure fun to use.

I've never quite found a satisfying 5D build though...I either have to sacrifice jumpjets, or go with a depressingly low amount of firepower. If you take out the JJs for an AC, you lose ton's of survivability against other lights. Using machine guns and max JJ's gives you some survivability, but you can't do much damage.

the 5K and 5D are good for different things. the D is a great scout mech any time there isnt a streak-ECM faceroller in the game, and with 3MPLS and that tiny hitbox you can really cause some pain in a brawl

the 5K is good for hanging around with your team, distracting and drawing fire from heavy/assault mechs who will struggle to hit you (but for some reason can't stop trying once they hear your MGs fire up), while your heavies get free shots on them. mine's painted bright orange so that you can't miss me. as an added bonus, 4MGs will crit exposed components pretty quickly now, so you can knock out weapons as well. 4/MG+ERLL is a fun troll build ;)

I run my 5V as a scout with an ERLL. It screams out to be a tagging machine, with those JJ that let you get so high up and out of the way, but you'd be reduced to running a single crit's worth of energy weaps if you did it. The 5D does pretty much everything the 5V does, but better. what good are those extra JJ if you have to choose between either tagging or doing damage once you get on top of that tall building? ;/

Leveling is the thing that needs to be fixed people are buying 3 mechs now mastering them and then selling off the 2 the don't use. At some point that needs to be fixed or your skills become inactive until you have 3 mechs again.

well from the screenshots Spiders can be decent when there isn't a 3L or 2D on the other team

Spiders can deal with a 3L or a 2D. You just have to think in 3 dimensions. ;)

I actually enjoy my 4 machine gun 5K. You constantly do damage and will sometimes get a kill...too bad the damage is close to nothing. The MG's sound awesome and i like the tracer rounds. It's a painful trek though.

The machine gun sound may be the greatest thing in this game.

True story, I took on 2 Raven 3Ls and a Streakcat in my Spider 5D and walked away with 3 kills and little damage..think in three dimensions and remember rule 1 of Light Mech Driving..always go fast and never EVER stop.

The spider, much like any mech in the game, is deadly in the hands of a competent pilot. You probably won't end up with a ton of kills, but you WILL help your team out.

All these people boasting about their DPS...

Doubt any of them are carrying TAG. Nice work, scout mech.

I play Mechwarrior for fun. For me, playing the Spider isn't fun. You all like the jump jets and that's fine, but in my experience with a Spider they just couldn't make up for the lack of firepower. I like flanking, scouting, and skirmishing, which is why I've had such fun with the X-5 grind recently.

A true Raven pilot, rather than an ECM bandwagoner, knows how to use his shoulder joints to shoot aerial targets. Don't let the crowd tarnish your image of the old guard who ran with 2Xs before the 3L.

Want a true challenge? Try leveling the Spiders. Holy cow! It's painful. Daunting. Stressful. Heartbreaking. Exciting. Frustrating. Joyous. Cringe worthy. Patience trying. Like parenting schizophrenic child as a paraplegic.

So... "real men" are masochists?

I can't wait to see someone be absolutely lethal in a Flea.

I leveled up my Spiders when they first came out. It was painful at times, sure, but they are still fun. I re-purchased the 5K yesterday and have been enjoying it again. I had a really great round where I killed two Ravens (the pilots weren't very good) and then laid the finishing blow on an Awesome before the enemy got me. It was fairly epic and unexpected.

Perhaps it is because all the Spider varients are tremendously underarmed and lightly armored that I find them fun. Winning takes alot of luck and a little skill in a mech with such a slew of disadvantages. Of course with it's tremendous speed, it's only real advantage is having other Spider pilots with you to harass larger mechs as a team between ducking behind cover.

That is pretty much the only way I die to Spiders when I'm piloting a medium or heavy, if I am swarmed. ;)

The Flea, while only weighing in at a piddly 20 tons, has a minimum of four energy hardpoints. One variant has five energy hardpoints, and the third has five energy and two ballistic hardpoints.

It will be lethal in the right hands.

Oh, and:

Hey, I could do a bit of damage with four small lasers or even a few mediums!

And to others grinding the Spider for experience, do as some have suggested and make sure you put a TAG on your mech and get Spotting experience. It adds up really quickly sometimes.

Dremster, that is really incredible! Good job. Was that an outlier of dramatic proportions, or do you have a lot of big games?

I usually average 300. That game it was 4 lights vs 4 assaults at the end. I found a good spot and fired my ERPPC on cooldown. By the time they figured out they should go cap and force us to them, they had already taken too much damage.

It was an unbalanced game they out weighed us by a lot. Probably why everyone above 35 tons on our team got trashed
