I'd like to crouch behind some sort of destroyed aircraft and lift my arm up and over the top and start unloading lasers.

Oh if i could punch other Mechs when piloting my Atlas i would fall off my chair almost every game!! I really want to be able to use my hands though, wanna grab a Raven as he runs past and pick those spindly legs off :)

In the table top you could flip your arms over backwards and use them for the rear arch, as long as you didn't have criticals spread (you could mount two AC20s with an XL for example, you put one crit from each AC20 in the CT or in the arms, they just had to be next to each other.

....but we don't get that functionality

you couldn't do that with an atlas.. its only for mechs with no lower arm actuators, like Rifleman, Jaggermech etc.

thats what rear mounted lasers were for.
