I give you guys WAY more credit than that. I think you can be JUST as exciting as a prescripted bot with a bit of text I know you can do it. Just buck up, and give me a real life cut scene in multiplayer. I know you can!

I know you think you're not as exciting as a piece of code in a mech skin, but I guarentee you, no matter who places the back of their hand over their mouth to stifle a yawn when you talk, you are more exciting than a bot. You can do it. I believe in you!

I have been thinking of a set of mission rules for PvP that might fit in here quite well. Instead of x vs x, where you go into a mission knowing what you're up against (roughly), I have been envisioning x vs ?.

Basically, you would chose a mission where you know what your objective is, and how many players will be on your side with you, but not what the enemy objective is, or what their strength would be. Examples of this are as follows:
  • Scouting.

1 Friendly mech (you) on your own, having been assigned to scout out an area to look for possible bases or patrols. Ahead of time, you don't know what you will face, but it could be any of 1 enemy scout doing the same as you, a patrol of 2 enemies on the look-out for invaders, or a full lance of enemies defending a base.

Your main objective is to get in, get some sensor data, and get back out without dying. The harder the mission (ie the more mechs you have to face/avoid) the greater the reward.
  • Patrol.

2 Friendly mechs (you and 1 other) are on patrol on the front lines, looking for interlopers. You may find a single scout mech trying to get in and out without being seen, or you may clash with an enemy patrol of 2, or you may come across a full lance of mechs trying to push passed you to get to a base (in a different mission).

Your objective is siply to destroy any mechs that come your way, again gaining more rewards for the greater number of enemies, and their own associated missions.
  • Full Incursion.

A full lance of friendlies puching through the enemy lines to get to a deeper objective. That objective may be near or far, and there may be other obstacles to overcome, so you may have to take out a single scout to prevent him from warning his command, or you may stumble on a 2-man patrol, or even make it to the base, in which case you would be tasked with destroying the base.
  • Base Defence.

A full lance of friendlies, this time defending a fixed asset from unknown invaders. This would either be from a single scout or a full incusion.
These missions would feel more like PvE than PvP because the objective is not simply to kill the enemy before they kill you, but to achieve some additional objectives, like slip passed patrols without being seen, or scout-n-get-out. It would also allow you to play PvP without needing to find a full lance to play with, as you could do it solo on your side (scout) or in a pair (patrol).

You could even string a sequence of these together in a mission meta-arc, for example a successful scout mission unlocks a full incursion mission, or a successful patrol unlocks a base defence.

Something of this nature would give more depth to the missions, and give an experience that is more like PvE, but retains the true PvP nature.

I honestly don't care for PvE that much. I play this game because I love the 'Mechs. And honestly, the idea of playing campaigns 24/7 in PvP matches....like what they detail in the novels is so much more COMPELLING then playing versus stupid bots for me.

But you know, different strokes for different folks :)

While I don't insist that PVE be a requirement for this game, I wouldn't mind some. Hell, I would love a revisitation of the original MW game storyline, Gideon Vandenburg returns. :)

PVP servers will be the launch menu, fine.

This will equate to Brag'alicious Combat Groups, ( my Genitals are bigger than your Genitals sessions) that end in an WOW/WOT/EVE gloating sessions, and then fade to black.....three months down the line you'll have 2 servers loaded with "Steiner" scout groupings and the franchise fading away again for another 10 years

The back bone of the Battletech story-lines is what we love, as the Devs have been claiming they are trending for the game play, and Mission allotments.

Without viewing expansions into new game play, they will lose advertising & direct paying customers over a period of time. I think Stormdragon hit on a few great Ideas...they should really consider

From the PC gamer Interview here: http://www.pcgamer.c...s-the-series/2/

Is there any chance of, say, cooperative missions? Where you’re playing through a story mission, or a fun challenge mission
with scripted events?

BE: We have considered co-op. We’ve discussed single-player. We’re looking at how those will play out. But right now, as part of the initial launch, those will not be included.

Sorry gang looks like PVE will be off the table at launch but that's not to say it will not come along later in this games life span.

Having gone over this a few times before I would simply put forward that something I would pay for (around the standard new game price), would be a redux of all the old MW games, adjusted to better fit the MWO playstyle, with multiplayer Co-Op, set in a seperate location (PVE has ABSOLUTELY NO EFFECT on PVE, except maybe to give me a sweet, wussy looking badge for my mech that says "I play like a noob", "Bot Slayer" or "Carebear 4 life" with bunnies holding submachineguns or some other appropriate image for someone who is playing the 'lesser mans' game, PVE). Also it would be a GREAT way to introduce the clans (MW2).

But to clarify... I can wait for that.

If you've read the novels, the Battletech Story-lines are actually "Brag'alicious Combat Groups, ( my Genitals are bigger than your Genitals sessions)" With some intrigue thrown in. You and me are the intrigue. I'm not sure you're missing out if you get your orders from Victor Penistien rather than a Victor Davion voice over.

The only element of the PvE "mechverse" that would interest me would be something like the "training" that World of Tanks clans can do on the actual battle maps, but with no impact on the realtime elements of the persistent PvP content. Having the ability to actually test that "medium laser alpha strike" concept on a hostile target without exposing oneself to the inevitable shouts of "Noob" and "U SUK" would be very welcome indeed. Beyond that, I just want to saddle up with like-minded pilots and deliver pain...I'll read the books for the story arc.

Eventually they will have to add PvE because I don't think just PvP will carry them for more than a year or so before people are pulled away to the next big title.

You can add 100 mechs and 100 maps to this game, but people will get tired of being killed by laser boat Atlas's, (Or whichever build at that time will be getting abused.)

In case people haven't noticed, its going to be the same setup as WoT. You'll need at least a premium account just to run the bigger mechs. Then they'll have a store so your buy your ultra depleted uranium rounds.(Or whatever they'll call them.)

They should call it FTP as long as you like being cannon fodder for the people who pay more than you do.

I really think you should look at what's been said about it before...they have never negated it, if you can show me a developer that said not ever please do.

No developer is idiotic enough to say that and start a forum dispute. Why would they?
Easy deflection, maybe after release.
The ideas are fine, NM.

I'm not saying that playing a cool co-op session with my boys wouldn't be a whole lot of fun. I played the MW4 campaign co-op and it was a blast. But until this thing is a success, any hour spent on some scripted "play as a movie" scene is an hour not spent making multiplayer frickin badass. And scripted campagins take a TON of hours, even if you spend a ton of hours making a tool to make it easy. So saying "its an elephant in the room" or "People will flock to the next game..."

This is MechWarrior... the MechWarriors will stay, the people who "flock to the next game" will do so regardless, because they're gamers, not MechWarriors, and a single player storyline will add what... another 15-30 hours of play time? Then they'll leave? What a terrible thing to do the Devs, making them slaves to putting out stories so that they can eek another 30 hours and $30 out of someone who actually probably isn't in love with the story anyway?.

yes, I have read all the books, and played all the MW games and restarting my TT career here in Hell, umm Utah, what the hell it's the same place..

Any rate I Digress, , having been an avid gamer since 78, ""the brag'alicious groups"" are the antithesis of my soul.

And yes, we are the intrigue, but how long will you sit around waiting to shoot the same guy/gals/groupings again, and again, and again, and again...?

Uhh..No. This is Completely FALSE.
You will NOT gain anything through real cash that provides more power which you cannot gain by earning in game cash (C-Bills)

NOT WoT, NOT P2W.

Right and we all know that going in.

I think that more than anything is why they will pretty much have to add some type of PVE for that reason alone, I think they really don't want to half-*** it more than anything, they have a huge opportunity to make something really unique, and they have the engine to do it.

Time will tell though.

Please, DO NOT ADD PvE! I played MW4 offline for 10 years, the last thing I want to fight against are more bots. I would rather fight living, breathing opponents. The developers should spend more time making new maps, adding more 'Mechs, and furthering the content they already have. Adding single player would just be a waste of resources in my opinion.

If it doesn't effect the PVP game why should you care? I love PVP and that is where I will spend most of my time, but ignoring a giant revenue stream is silly, CCP was talking about thier mission system a couple of years back and said without those players EvE would have folded years ago; diametrically WAR cut the throat of it's PVE game and left it to bleed out in an Alley, we all see where they are......never slap away cash, especially if you're a developer.

What revenue stream would MWO gain? People who play by themselves and pay one time to do so?
Mission runners in Eve are directly tied to PVPers.
WAR did NOT fail due to its horrible PVE.
PVE in MWO would only detract from the focus of the game which is PVP (and its Meta attachment)

I think they should have a base defense game with no impact on the overall game except maybe achievements or something where you and your lance/company are swarmed by waves of urbanmechs. Think CoDs Nazi Zombies except urbies are way more adorable. They could explain it in lore as some Comguard simulator or something

yes, over and over . . . . your missing the point: I don't care so much about PVE, as I am in expanded game play, and story-line effects of that game play, if it is accomplished through PVP/PVE/ or whatever, fine, just don't kill this game with boredom
