Personally, I run with full armor, maybe a slight reduction on the arms when necessary. Think of them as shields protecting your XL engine and weapons.

If torso armor is not already maxed, it makes sense to remove it from arms and add to torso, right?

Like others have said, dropping in a xl300 and swapping the srm2s' for srm4s' is a great build. I bring 3 tons of ammo and fill up the rest with DHS and enjoy the fun.

Yes, for sure. I always start when customizing with max armor and go from there. On most large mechs I'll take a few points from the legs to get the weight to a round number (.5 or .0), but for the CDAs I'll take a couple from the arms. Max everywhere else and nearly max on arms is how I like it! ;)

Remember that you only need 10 armor on your head. The rest is a waste as you'll need/want that added half ton.

My legs tend to get shredded fast, i don't slow down or anything they're just easy to hit i guess.

Fair enough I suppose.

Can CDA not be head-shot or something?

Warning: Troll Build

Well, yeh, with only two ports per missile rack you'll be there all game waiting on your first shot to finish.

Slight decrease in speed, optimized close-in firepower, TAG to make friendly missile boats smile.

Yeah, i'm confused.

The torso and legs are definitely the damage magnets of this mech, but in the mechlab it looks like the head hitbox is quite large. Granted, i've never been headshotted that i can remember =/

I don't think I've ever been headshotted in a CDA either, but my philosophy is why tempt fate :(

I'm running X-5 with XL270 engine (with speed tweak it goes 120kph), 2xER Large Laser, 2xLRM5.
No extra heatsinks other than which come with the engine. Upgraded Internal Structure and Ferro Fibrous Armor are must for saving weight.

Mainly just trying to circle on the sides of the enemy, stay well back (over 500 meters) and pepper them with LRMs and some laser. It doesn't do damage of epic proportions and lights area real pain if they get on you, but somehow it's still fun.
You have to also remember that if the enemy can hit you with medium lasers, you're way too close.

the X-5 has arguably the best stock build of any mech (for their weight category obviously)

I tend to run stock, plus ferro, switching the MLas for 2 Slas on the arms and 2 MPLas in the torsos, filling all else with DHS. Allows a bit more instant-hit for guerilla runs.

I dropped a DHS out of the engine and replaced the SRM2's with Streak SRM2's seems to work pretty well.

3 ML, 2 SSRM2s, BAP, XL330, good armor (but not quite max possible, about a half ton short). After the patch for BAP goes live, this will murder ECM lights and is already good against anything without ECM.

You may note that this is basically the super-common Raven 3L build, but it has more armor.

Alternatively, downgrade to SL and add another ML and some armor. Loses ranged damage output but can be nasty inside 90m.

Swap 2 SRM for 2 SSRM and drop 1 ton of ammo. You will hardly spend all the ammo. You will move very fast and often fight equally fast ones and 2 SSRMs are really helpful

I usually run either the build that Levi suggested or I drop to a 300XL and run 2SRM6s. Both have been quite effective for me.

I went with the 2A and 2B to go along with my X-5. 5-6 MLs can really wreck stuff, but the X-5 is my favorite. I enjoy harrassing Ravens, Commandos, Spiders, and Jenners for a change.

I thought the X-5 was gonna be a joke when I bought it in a drunken stupor. I was wrong.

*nods* I've enjoyed mine and am looking forward to trying it out after the changes on the 21st. I already had the 2A/2B/3M mastered so it fit naturally in.
