I am honestly concerned that adding the Clans will either flat-out break the game or, at best, render all pre-clan mechs and gear completely worthless.

Clans would definitely have their shortcomings. They would be fewer in numbers, that's for sure. Imagine fighting 5 vs 12, that's how you see a ballanced IS-Clan fight in TT.
Also, there is a clan way of conduct. I'm pretty sure that more than half of those who waits drooling for clans to join them, never even heard anything about it. While it's an intricate stuff that both makes clanners cool and often leads them to disasters and balances things out. That's why I guess that joining the Clans should be earned or something.
As for me I am totally IS.
P.S. And in MWO MadCat should be called "...Cat", for there is nothing to get inspiration from for the first part.

first off no i have absolutly no want to play in a clan or pilot a clan mech... personally i like the struggle of the innerspher and the underdog story especially that of the FRR...
with game mechanics as is... everyone has something to say about this weapon or that weapon balance this or balance that right now... so can you even begin to imagine when clan tech comes into play?
on this note, if you were to go against clan mechs vs innersphere mechs you would have to make some notable adjustments, like innershpere would need the 3 lances vs like 1 star of clan or 2 lances vs 1 star... b/c an even amount of clan mechs is not gonna work...
I already hear way to much about oh can't wait for mrm or streak srm 4/6..... uh i can wait! or not want at all... as before blance and adjusting will be a nightmare... and the clans should be able to destroy...
however what will probably happen is a blendof things to adjust fo all compensations needed... and will probably add bonus c-bills or other things to innershpere mechs etc...
i just have great fear and i am hoping to enjoy the game as it is for as long as possible until the clan **** arrives...

- Hey, have you heard? They've released a new mech!
- Yea - what's it like?
- A bit like the Marauder and a bit like the Catapult!
- ....
*restates his whole ever ever statement and buys a MadCat*

Anyway, Clans are not so better.. But this is a long story.
I think Clan Mechs look FAR better than IS umanoid mechs. Seeing their designs on Sarna.net, they look very similar eachother. That is why my favourite IS mechs are Catapult, Marauder and Warhammer. Clan 'mechs are original and cool.
Finally,i cannot wait to play with Clan 'mechs. I joined a Clan Wolf unit and i am ready to

I'm OK with them adding them and hope they do them right.
I have a feeling, however, that this will end up being "Go Clan or Go Home" as with tabletop, in which case, well, I'll go home.
If DHS are anything to go by, PGI aren't afraid of nerfing future clan tech from TT values into a non-OP form. I think later on (much later on maybe) IS tech is on par with clan tech in a lot of areas.

I think they'll balance the weapons out with the massive heat differences. More damage, fewer shots should be ok.
As far as the omnitech, i think they'll have hardpoints where any weapon can be mounted, a-la MW:4 and will cost an arm, leg and your firstborn to actually buy with C-Bills, same with the weapons. Those "any" slots can be used to give you the same flexability as a chassis choice for an IS mech.
I can't imagine that IS mechs wont have clan weapons available to them, its only fair.
