Except that this game doesn't have a captive audience and being a multiplayer game will need a relatively large player base to succeed.
In a previous era of gaming PGI's levels of communication would have been fine but companies like Riot have screwed that up by being friendly and frequently talking to the players. The goalposts have moved.
It's the running from a lion joke but told in real life.
Whats good for one company, isn't for another. Besides, PGI has been very good about their communication. They've also been very good at finding the source of a problem that the players bring up, especially since the players see only the symptoms.
Good example was ECM and Ravens. Ok Raven 3Ls were OP. If they followed every suggestion made by players. ECM, BAP, and the entire Raven chassis (all three variants) would have been removed from the game. I know some players would have loved to see that. But this would have been taking a sledgehammer to a problem that only requires a scalpel.
The problem was HSR wasn't implemented as well as the hitbox. They fixed both, and you know what? ECM isn't nearly as scary as it used to be. But yet some players still think it is a godly piece of equipment. And all that does is confirm what I already knew, players just cannot adapt, do not know what they really want, and really just have no clue how to balance.
This community has a horrible habit of making mountains out of molehills. NOTHING that they have been in uproar about has ever affected my experience in a negative way. ECM, boating, LRMs, nothing that was OP had ever negatively impacted my game play. I don't claim to be the best player at this game, but by everyone elses accounts, it makes me seem that I'm adaptive as hell.
I know I'm a vet, but I don't understand why everyone simply cannot adapt as well as I can to changes in the game. I've had my suggestions, recommendations, and even concerns about MWO. I don't think everything about MWO is perfect. But I will say this. Its a gem in the rough as far as every other MechWarrior game has been in comparison.
HSR by itself makes MWO much much better than MW2 or MW3.
Gauss Rifles do good damage, they didn't in MW2 or MW3
Autocannons are threatening, they weren't in MW2
AC2s and AC5s are decent, first MW game to make them so.
Streaks and SRMs are different, only MW4 did this, SRMs locked on in MW2 and MW3
Mixed loadout builds are competitive vs boats, first MW game to do this (least my builds are)
There's things that are lacking. But everything that is, they've stated they will be working on fixing. Many of you think they should simply hotfix things like PPCs and other things. Sometimes simply hotfixing doesn't really work. Sometimes letting it play out gives you a better feel for how to fix it. Thats what has been going on lately. They are collecting data on them.
We forget that we signed on to Beta Test. Sometimes doing crazy stuff will be useful in the long run. I mean I hear the doom and gloom about how they are chasing away players. But I have yet to see anyone truly leave. They make a whiny post to grab attention, but then they are in game as normal. I mean if any of you want to prove you're quitting, send me your account info, I'll change the pass to something I'll forget so that it stays dead. Course no one will actually do that.
With that being said, things aren't as bad as people claim. This is a product of the current gaming generation:
1. Self entitled. They have gone through High School being told they are a unique snowflake by their guidance counselors. They believe what they do is the perfect way of doing things. If you do it differently, you're wrong. If you're on their team, your Underpowered, if you're opposing them, you're overpowered.
2. Incapable of Adapting. This comes from the first issue. Everyone seems to come onto MechWarrior Online (this can apply to any game), and gets their tail whooped. Even I did in the Closed Beta. This happens till we find something that works. They then use that style or tactic, or configuration exclusively. This isn't limited to a single chassis, but a mindset. But then when something beats it. Instead of changing things up, these players instead come to the forums to complain. Obviously their build hasn't changed, but something the game developer changed made their way of playing less then it was or even obsolete.
3. Intolerance. This is the ironic part. These gamers are normally associated with the groups that advocate social tolerances on things like sexuality, self expression, and political correctness (when most people simply just don't care). However, should a player be different then them, they go out of their way to insult, ridicule, and demonize them. This follows from number two. For example, Raven 3Ls, when players couldn't get the Devs to nerf them to the ground or remove them. They went after their fellow players that used them. They also go after players that use things they think are less then par such as Centurions and Spiders (despite results being shown they can be competitive). The point here is, why not simply just leave the other player alone? Well because despite their political and social beliefs, they are hypocrites are very intolerant.
In the end, our gaming generation (not simply community), is very selfish and incapable of adaptation. The best way to deal with them is to simply silence them. I mean its easy to tell who is being constructive and who isn't. Someone that brings up an issue in a dignified manner and is polite is being constructive. Someone throwing insults at devs can simply have their posting privileges removed. They don't have anything constructive to add to the discussions, they never do.
These players act like PGI doesn't listen. That is a farce. Every concern I've brought up, has been addressed or is on the line of being looked at. Some of them were even directly responded to by a dev. I've never had that done by any other gaming company out there. But they are still 'unresponsive' to the community. But they are still 'ignoring' the community. That is a load of bullsh-t and those players know it. But as I said, they think they are unique pretty little snowflakes and how dare anyone think otherwise. They want their medal for participation, not actually winning.
