This isn't a troll, this isn't asking for flaming. I'm asking (futile request as it may be) that people not argue about it. This is just a poll to find out why the current meta is. People have fun for different reasons.

I don't plan on arguing with anyone in here.

My primary mechs right now are:
YLW - ac20/2med lasers (30pt alpha)
HBK-4H - 4 med lasers/ac20 (40pt alpha)
HGN-733C AC20/2 Large Pulse Lasers, LRM15 (40pt+ Alpha) (Jumpjets)
JR7-K - 4 Med Pulse Lasers, 1 SRM 4 (30 pt alpha) (Jumpjets)
CTF-1X - 5 Med Lasers, 1 AC20 (45pt Alpha)

It's simply how I play, how I like to play and how I've learned to play. My game has always been centralized on dropping a heavy shot on someone and then engaging in defensive twists/piloting then exchanging another blow. I don't view these as Snipers because they're all only effective within 400m or less. My jumpjets on my HGN typically aid in pursuing enemies more than ridge-camping (not enough range). I'm either a flanker (My Medium Mechs/Jenners) or leading the charge (CTF or HGN).

I appreciate your input; though you are correct, that isn't sniping. I would consider that maneuver brawling/striking. (Being that the longest range weapon I see is either the AC20 or LPL.)

Again, thank you.

I pilot my mediums all the time when I am feeling masochistic

But if I want to compete I am forced to bring my cataphracts or highlanders

most of them don't carry JJs

but they all carry 2-4 PPCs

Poptarts are not the problem

sniping in general is

my CTF 1X carries 4 PPCs and runs 86.6kph

my CTF-3D carries 4 PPCs and runs 76.4kph with jump jets

my HGN-733P carries 4PPCs streaks and jump jets

my CTF-2x carries 1gauss\2PPCs\2streaks and runs 76kph

my stalker

3f of course

carries 6 PPCs and has a 6.1kdr to match

seeing a pattern?

although i haven't played in several days, I basically only played HGN/3D jump snipers because someone on my team has to be useful. i feel pretty much same as LordBraxton above me. we can't all have "fun" bringing BJs and other horribad mediums. We need some people capable of getting >125 dmg.

i got bored so i likely won't be playing until next patch.

I suppose I'll honour your request to not argue... much... :)

I built a poptart so that I could see how others counter it and employ those tactics with my other mechs (which, sadly, has not yielded any information that I did not already know).

The only fun part about playing a poptart, for me, is killing other poptarts. There's a strange satisfaction in knowing that, yes, I too can pilot a poptart and when I do I will royally kick your sorry ***. Yeah, I too can aim a set of crosshairs on an unsuspecting mech behind that ridge! I too can inflate my stats with a single tactic! So don't you dare start bragging about how good you are in that precious 90 ton-... sorry. I was getting carried away. :)

I much prefer well-rounded configurations.

its pretty fun to play poptart.

but i can see how as a non poptart mech it can be annoying. and as a short range mech, how annoying it is when the match is a snipeoff.

i never understood the hate for a style. u gotta play ever style to know how to beat a style. u can't just be a popsniper and never brawl then exert to beat a brawl rush ever time vs a exert brawling team. u can dislike a style and not wish to play it, find it OP. some ppl just filled with hate.

to answer the question yes i popsnipe, i do love it, may not be the best at:P my unit can back up my statement for that

Ok, I'll bite. I played eleven matches on the weekend after having avoided the game for months. Curiosity got the better of me and I wanted to see what the game was like, given all the feedback on the forums. It was every bit as bad as I imagined it would be.

I started the day with my old Cataphract 3D build, armed with 2x Ultra AC/5, 1x Large Laser and 2x Medium Laser. I quickly found out that it was pointless trying to line up sustained Ultra AC fire, because that would just get me killed off rather quickly by returning pin-point accurate alpha strikes. The game as it stands now is all about the high alpha with minimal exposure. I went to a 3x PPC + 1x Gauss Rifle build, but it morphed over to the tried and true 2x PPC, 1x Gauss Rifle, 2x Medium Laser build. It retains some jump mobility and a good engine.

Lo and behold, I was immediately competitive again once I moved over to the PPCs. I don't see myself playing again until they do something about the current convergence and heat systems. The game has turned into something of a joke at this point, sadly.

I use them for two reasons:

A - Because it is fun
B - Because it's the only way to compete

How do I rectify those? Simple - I think Jump Sniping is a legitimate tactic that has a very real place in MechWarrior. It's also pretty fun to do.

However I do not think it should be the only thing viable.

During the LRM apocalypse, jump snipers still had a very solid, very useful and important role in combat. LRMs were, at the end that experience, about on par with them. This made them fun again.

Basically, playing a Jump Sniper in a mixed force that includes Jump Snipers = Fun. Forcing people to play all Jump Snipers as the only viable option = Not fun.

So yeah. Don't screw jump snipers - fix the other weapons so they're not the only game in town.

Because winning is fun, and winners are people who identify what's the advantageous flavour of the month, and leverage that to get their wins.

Then when that changes, regardless of whether its because people QQ or because it was a real imbalance that needed fixing, winners find something else that works and continue winning.

Had my RVN-4X set up as a poptart for quite a while. While your poll excludes me because the alpha was only 20, I will say that I did not enjoy it and I did it because it is just about the only reasonable build in that variant and I got really tired of getting my legs blown off in one hit starting from no damage; there were really no other valid playstyles.

I ran Highlander jumpsnipers when I was mastering them and I enjoyed it. They're good at range but brawling is a big problem with the high heat so the challenge is in getting and maintaining good positioning, having good situational awareness and having good aim.

I voted 'because I have to' because I find it's the best build for a highlander, I think there are other mechs that make much better brawlers. I don't think jump sniping is required to win though. I've been running a UAC5/ml Jager recently and it makes an excellent brawler, I often did the top or near top damage with it. Every build has its own strengths and weaknesses and I enjoy playing them all.

I run a Stalker with 2xERPPC and 2xPPC sometimes. Mainly because it works, and getting nailed by a sniper in most of my brawler games is not fun.

When playing a brawler is a reliable choice again, I'll switch back to that.

I usually play a AC40 Jager build while in a 3-mech team that typically consists of two "assault" Jagers and one PPC boat Awesome.

I play the AC40 Jager not because it's fun, nor because it's easy (which is debatable), but because it's the most expedient way of settling an arguments between mechs. In games where I work as part of a team, our tactic is usually to flank and ambush the enemy team. When that is your bread and butter, you have a very short time frame to inflict as much damage and kills as possible before the enemy concentrates to destroy you. Bringing the biggest guns you can to the fight is the sensible choice. It's a job; get it done in the cleanest, meanest way possible, and survive to talk about it.

FWIW when soloing, I played LRM boats, Fast Dragons, lights, Centurions, energy assaults etc. all to varying success/ failure, so I do try out other builds. Nothing is as final as a GunJaeger build though.
