Based on my experience in Mechwarrior 2, 3 & 4, I seem to prefer heavy class mechs.

I'll give them all a whirl of course but light or medium will be my most likely choices.

The 'Mechs I'm most eager to pilot are the Raven and the Catapult...so Heavy/Light for me.
Might of course change during play, when I realize others are more my style...

I'd run a heavy, a medium, and a light mech in the order before I play an assault mech!

Daishi with 3 Clan Ultra AC/20.. one shot one kill. Up close and personal. And still enough armor to withstand any beating.

My custom built Dire Wolf, made with Heavy Metal Pro.

BATTLE VALUE CALCULATION FOR Dire Wolf (Daishi) Deneve
VALIDATED Design

DEFENSIVE BATTLE RATING CALCULATION:
Total Armor Factor x 2 304 x 2 = 608
Total Internal Structure Points x 1.125 152 x 1.125 = 171
Total 'Mech Tonnage 100
Total BV of all Defensive Equipment 0
--------
879

(Max. potential Heat Points - Heat Sink Capacity) x 5 (32 - 30) x 5 = 10
--------------------
10

879
-10
----------
At a full Run of 5, Movement Modifier is + 2 869
Multiply by Defensive Movement Factor of 1.2 x 1.2
----------
DEFENSIVE BATTLE RATING = 1042.8
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

OFFENSIVE BATTLE RATING CALCULATION:
Offensive Weapons: Heat:
1 Gauss Rifle + 4 T ammo 1 321 + 4 x 33 = 453
2 Medium Pulse Laser 2 x 4 2 x 111 = 222
1 Gauss Rifle 1 321
2 Medium Pulse Laser 2 x 4 2 x 111 = 222
1 SRM 6 + 1 T ammo 4 59 + 7 = 66
2 Medium Pulse Laser 2 x 4 2 x 111 = 222
Targeting Computer BV = .2 x Weapon BV 1308 x .2 = 261.6
+ 2 Running Heat --------
Base Weapon Battle Rating 32 Max Heat Points 1767.6

Adjust Base Weapon Battle Rating for 'Mech's Heat Efficiency
X = (Total Heat Sinks x Base Weapon Battle Rating) / Max Heat Points
(30 x 1767.6) / 32 = 1657.125
Y = (Base Weapon Battle Rating - X) / 2 (1767.6 - 1657.125) / 2 = 55.2375
--------------
Modified Weapon Battle Rating = X + Y = 1712.3625

Calculate Speed Factor
Add Running MP + Jumping MP 5 + 0 = 5

Speed Factor (based on table or calculation) = 1.00
Offensive Battle Rating = Modified Battle Rating x Speed Factor
1712.3625 x 1.00 = 1712.3625

OFFENSIVE BATTLE RATING = 1712.3625
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Total BV = Defensive BV + Offensive BV: 1042.8 + 1712.3625 = 2755.1625

TOTAL BATTLE VALUE FOR 'MECH = 2,755

If there is a Puma light mech to pilot... I will load that baby up with 2x ER-PPC and a buttload of heatsinks.

Assault sucks they have been nerfed too much so why bother with a slow mech that even a light can kill =\

Best to stick with Heavy or Medium as they can move fast and stack on guns too

Why do you say that? One on One, on paper, Saults win every time. It takes skill to pilot any Mech; not to mention, most matches, you are going to have lancemates at your side doing their respective jobs.

I prefer medium class mechs, mainly as support, for manuverability and sustainable fire support.

Truth be told I think the Atlas look ugly as sin, like some giant fat bald guy. Like.... I don't know. If I have to play assault because my team needs me to, then fine. Otherwise I'll most likely not.

I'm going to primarily go assault, but I'm also going mess around with med and light a bit too.. So Jack of all trades for me, I love the Raven and Cataphract. But who could deny the awesomeness of an autocannon decked out Atlas? xD

I actually believe Assault Mechs will be in the minority come release. I'm used to players abusing whatever "tactic" they can get their hands on in games so you would likely see lots of circle strafing players just picking on the "I turn really sloooow" Atlas. Unless he has allies to "stop" that from happening, it looks like he would actually be very vulnerable by himself. Because turning your torso and Mech is a factor in this game, and because Assault Mechs will be very slow at that, I anticipate most players preferring Medium or Heavies. My ideal brawler Mech will probably be a Hunchback or Dragon. I doubt I'll prefer Assault at all unless my Founder Atlas is the last undamaged Mech out of the 4 that I'll own or if my team specifically needs an Assault for some reason. Assault will simply be too slow to keep up with the enemy. They will constantly block you with terrain inbetween their weapon cycles or just strafe around you in a circle until you die. GL with that slow speed.

Yep, speed and mobility is the key.
So the most playable mechs will be the ones, that will be the better compromise between speed and armament load.
