The devs are working on bringing mortars into play over the next few months. You ready to get a few tubes on your Mech?

I don't have any sources to present atm because i'm too lazy, but the Mortars will probably work the same way as the BT mortars

each shell does 1 dmg
120rds/ton
mortar sizes 1, 2, 4, and 8

they are not as affective as LRMs, but they are low tonnage ballistics weapons that are unaffected by AMS and they do not notify the enemy of their presence. there are a few more pros and cons, but these are the main ones.

I'm not sure for MWO, but in BT it was 2 tons, 5 tons, 7 tons, and 9 tons by size respectively. All clan versions were half the weight. also, in later tt of BT, the mortars did 2 damage per shell.

those are all the way from closed beta. the Blazer was also in the files.

i think the chances of seeing any of these are slim.

I don't remember a mortar in the files. The Blazer and Long Tom were definitely in the files though.

Mortars would aid in tactical play. I would be happy to lob rounds over hills/buildings to flush out enemy, very much in support of this idea.

Maybe so, but I'm pretty sure they've also said they won't be in before timeline says they should be. That being said, I want to drive the Spider 5K "mortar edition".

What's eharmoney? Is that the matchmaking system for pilots?

---
Serious comment: In addition to standard mortars, I would like to see flare/lighting mortars, smokescreen mortars, and maybe some kind of electronic warfare mortar, though I don't know if that last thing is remotely canon. Not that that would be a reason not to have it.

Also a button to cycle ammo type/feed, if you bring multiple. Such a system would be needed if they get around to more AC ammo type options in the near future.

I just hope (and know that they won't) that they have a 'screaming" effect as the mortar comes in. That ALONE will make me (ab)use the hell out of it no matter how weak it is. +100000000000000000000000000000000000000 awesome points if they make it like the Javelin.

'Mech Mortars could be a very useful weapon under certain circumstances. If the shells have a splash damage radius and low accuracy, they should be good for flushing enemies out of cover, or suppressing point captures and sniping positions.

I would agree to have them splash the area around where each shell hit the ground.

To quote myself from the other Blazer thread - this is what's in the files currently:
Blazer is indeed in the files as a placeholder, along with Long Tom Cannon, Grenade Launcher, Sniper Cannon, Mech Mortar (1,2,4,8), and Thumper Cannon.

I remember the LT from other MW games, but as I'm not a TT player, no idea what the others are...

Of course, they may never be in the game either. I see something in there for PPC Ammo (!), which I don't see happening.

Also, I believe Mortars are 2 damage per mortar shell, not 1. They are sort of like missile systems.

Mech Mortar/1 (Shoots 1 Mortar at a time) - 2 Total Damage
Mech Mortar/2 (Shoots 2 Mortars at a time) - 4 Total Damage
Mech Mortar/4 (Shoots 4 Mortars at a time) - 8 Total Damage
Mech Mortar/8 (Shoots 8 Mortars at a time) - 16 Total Damage

My question is how are you going to aim with them. ACs are direct fire but mortars take a arching trajectory and they're not guided. So, how the Hell would you end up using them? I would hate for them to be a ground targeted system cause that is just down right clunky.

Use your range finder and guess... although they would have to have a very low recycle rate and good ammo per tonne for this.
