Complexity for the sake of complexity is bad.

But then dumbing the game down purely to try to make this niche game into a mainstream one (which is never going to happen) would also be bad.

It's not something you can make a blanket statement about. And it's not a mutually exclusive thing, it's not everything is complex or everything is simple.

new player experience can be greatly simplified by just adding one thing .

it will not take way from the games complexity nor will it burden new players mechanics to learn .

the idea is :

Config packs for mechs .

instead of buying each component individually  the new user can choose from a selection of predefined configurations for their mechs .

this packs may not be the end all be all of a mechs potential  but they put the mech in the running with all other custom builds.

they should be offered for  cbills cost of the components + a few percentage for the convenience factor.

this alone would make mech warrior newbie friendly as it would only be a 3 part system

buy your mech .. buy a config pack that fits your play style.

jump in game and shoot something .

This will address the new player learning curve / experience and give them time to understand what it takes to make a decent mech design. The problem i have with this is stock mechs are still junk and they shouldn't be. they are junk because of the game mechanics. fix that and stock mechs can approach viability. The new player experience should improve. i also think new players should have a suppressed ELO ratting and only fight other new players.

I addressed the OP original concerns in a different thread.
All games have a learning cure that will not appeal to all players. WOT is very linear with a COF, 45 million accouts. MWO attempts to add more complexity with no COF, but fails to teach it system well to new players. a very valid point, but the game needs more game layers for better game play. this would let new players compete, other wise we are left with the high damage alpha with new players getting gutted in under 60 seconds.

Stock mechs would be simple to use and the mech lab lets those players customize there mechs. as it stands the mech lab is a huge advantage and is hard to learn. again valid point. the complexity being asked for is in my gaming experience is on the low side. i am including EVE in this assessment. EVE is the most complex, ruthless game besides grand master level chess or go.
