I wouldn't care either way. To be honest, there is a lot in the Btech canon that left me thinking "***?" For starters, the great houses; you've got your space Chinese, your space Japanese, your space America and your space Britain, etc. Woah so cool. I mean comon, you're going to tell me that entire quadrants of space spanning 500 lightyears in every direction has been colonzied, and they all share the same culture as one tiny little nation on Earth? It doesn't make sense.

Its like, "Ok everyone, we're going to colonize space! Now everyone from Japan has to colonize 1000 star systems in this direction, and everyone from China gets this part of the pie, and somehow we'll maintain these distinct cultural differences a thousand years later with the advent of faster-than-light travel being common place. Yeah thats right we're gonna walk around with katanas and pretend we're samurais in the 31st century!! Derp!"

And this, kids, is why reading is fundamental.

You make valid points regarding the gross misinterpretation and flat-out oversimplification of the Battletech lore. But people want one-to-one analogies and one line soundbites so they don't have to read or actually think about anything. This kind of nonsense irks me to no end because people actual think that is how it works.

Sorry, Jayboltz, this wasn't directed at you but your post was convenient.

My brethren and fellow Squaaawks have never been retconned, and thus are the true heirs to the stars along with the Word of Lowtax.

Kaetetôã is our homeworld, and it can be reached by a jumpship, maybe.

I say we should let the community decide events relating to the Jihad, when it comes. Many/most people agree that it was crap, and I'm pretty sure I'd be done playing if the bloody blakists nuke everything. The Clans were fun, the Jihad was lame - make it never happen.

Either way, I see no reason for any present or imminent events to be changed.

ahm, you are a bit off here... Actually the houses and their territories are INFLUENCED by the former earth cultures, they are not what these nations and cultures are today... there are caucasian kuritas en masse, as well as coloured Liaos, Korean Steiners and what not... cultures evolved, and ppl take those cultures for identification... i can´t see what´s wrong with that

Theres always references to the DC military following Bushido or whatever you call it. My point is even today the world is becoming more homogenous, so its very hard to accept that entire space societies across countless planets all adhere to one small culture. I think that they are influenced by former earth cultures to a level that is really quite ridiculous. Yes they aren't all STRICTLY japanese, but there are parts of it that go way overboard. Like for instance, the Kentares Massacre where they killed millions of people, many of which were beheaded by katanas and such...Comon, really? That's happening in this space society? Oh but they're civilized enough to not use nuclear weapons...

Basically you're saying that they're not as culturally tied to earth cultures as I think, but comon dude. Using katanas...bushido code... countless references to Japanese culture throughout the lore. Sounds like an entire japanese space empire to me.

I'm not bashing the crap out of Battletech lore. And I don't have a vendetta against the DC. Don't get bent out of shape, I've always been a big fan of it. But I certainly wouldn't go so far as to treat Btech lore as gospel. What would be so wrong with just having a dynamic timeline. People are getting MAD when someone wants to re-write the clan invasion and such in a game. It doesn't have to be canon. I think that would be fun, not heresy.

Look at Starwars, it's one of the best Sci-fi stories of all time, but there's tons of great (and not so great) non-canon lore in it. If anything, the worst thing that happened to Starwars was the new canon that came with the new episodes. Some of it is really cringe-worthy.

You could easily call them 'obscure'. None of them are particularly famous or popular outside of btech circles at all. Heck I've been into btech since the mid 90's as a kid and haven't heard of most of the titles you listed. Just because they've been around since I was 3 does not make them any less obscure to a lot of people. Heck I know plenty of people who love battletech and have no clue the novels even exist.

Theres probably a metric ton of people who've never played the table top game, and have only played the computer games some only having started with mech 4, who don't even know there are books about a game they know nothing about. And more and more people are going to join in on the universe at MWO as their first btech/mechwarrior game pushing the books into further obscurity.

People who've read all the books and know them all are going to become more and more of a minority than they already are, and the books are going to continue to fade into obscurity. This is the way of things. And considering all the plot armor, mary sues, favortism I have heard complaned about from different people I've gamed with over the past 20 years I don't see how thats not a good thing...

this ones kind of silly, no they are not obscure, while yes there are not a billion of us BT lovers out there I have never had a problem walking into Barnes and Nobles and finding plenty of BT books from the beginnng to the end, heck even Waldons usually has some of the older books, you just have to be the type of reader who goes to the Book store as often as the hobby shop, or just order them online you can get em easy peasy and rikki tik, so im wicked confused by this constant reference to obscure, heck they have free copies of everyone of em online, but im not sure if they are legal or not, bit fuzzy on internet laws.

I'm not trying to troll diehard-BT fans here, I'm just saying open your mind and see the potential behind the newest installment of Mechwarrior!

I've been playing the tabletop since before the game was a decade old. I've read tons of the fiction, played nearly every iteration of the BT/MW games, and absolutely love the lore. I am definitely a "diehard" fan, and I'm EXTREMELY excited about the chance to be a part of a re-written future. A Clan invasion from a completely different axis, for example, would be awesome!

I know for a fact I'm not the only "diehard" or "old-school" BT/MW fan that thinks this way, either. For some of us the chance to re-write history (or, more appropriately, write the future) is one of the most exciting things about this game.

Yes, somehow Swedenese got left out in the "I'm going to think about this as simply as possible" rant.

If it were so obvious, I'm not sure we'd see the diversity of thoughtful responses and friendly disagreements here
