What's the easier hit to take? Tell the community some completely unrealistic and unhittable target date and suffer only a missed deadline or turn off half of your playerbase until 2014 and go bankrupt?
I bet they aren't missing any of their own deadlines internally and that they just have decent PR skills.

The reality though, is that we do not need the clans introduced to this game any time soon. They are just going to screw up what little balance we have.
Having community warfare clearly needs to take precedence over introduction of clans.

No - Clans mean a big injectuion of cash with several mech bundles - much more important and not reliant on trying to get a game engine to do things it was never designed for.
Memo - order sheet metal instead of foil.
