Well, you're like me. But it's got to be right - something fairly epic and hollywoodesque. The sort that could be found on the soundtrack of a blockbuster war or space movie. Always just music, no lyrics. I stumbled across a collection of "epic" music collections from Audiomachine on youtube. They seem to do the trick. Search for "epic music audiomachine" and you'll come across some 1 hour long compilations that I think fit the game well and can be played in the background when playing the game... Just a suggestion to those who believe music helps add to immersion.

I hate to be THAT guy, but wouldn't adding music be the exact opposite of immersion? When I usually see that term used, it's in reference to creating an environment that is as absolutely realistic as possible. Having random music wafting through the air from some disembodied source that follows you around everywhere seems like it would break the immersion.

It's a different kind of immersion - almost movie-esque. There was an old 80s movie (Iron Eagle I think) where part of the final climatic scene involved the main character flying a fighter jet, slapping a tape into a walkman, and winning the against-all-odds victory. And when playing Gunship, I certainly found that having Ride of the Valkyries blaring would really get you pumped to go blow the {Scrap} out of things.

As Buckminster said - it's movie-esque immersion. Watch your favorite war/sci-fi/thriller/drama move without a musical score and it'll feel like it's missing something. Personally, I feel like a battle-oriented score helps a great deal. But, to each his own, of course.

If I had a battlemech, Id be darn sure to put in a subwoofer amp so powerful it required me to tap into the mechs nuclear reactor to power it, and enough JL W7s to use it as a ground splitting chasm generator to swallow entire fleets.

We have a Hero Mech dedicated to Heavy Metal. Of course we need music.

I'd like to think my mech at least has a radio.

these so called hi tech machines don't even have a reversing camera, hardly surprising that bluetooth connectivity is missing also.

The most realistic way to have music in MWO, is to just turn on your own music.
I know that I'd be listening to some tunes while sat in my Mech. Would be boring as hell without it.

I mean, what kind of music would you listen to if you were in a Mech?
Just fire up iTunes and enjoy!

Well, no. Because of the above. When I was a kid and we were going to a friend's house, we could hear the bike chain on the sprockets, the tyres on the road and the wind in our ears. And not much else. Nowdays? Blaring music so loud it has a profound and damaging effect on your long-term prospects for being able to hear anything at all.

Random, disembodied music has been following people through the world since portable radios were invented. First in our cars, then anywhere you could take a transistor radio. Every phone is an MP3 player and if you don't have one of those? A functional MP3 player and a set of headphones can be bought for under 10 bucks these days. The world is getting to a state where this disembodied music is so pervasive that many think it's too quiet or downright creepy if music isn't following you everywhere.

Constant music is "normal" for a large slice of the population. Some simply can't imagine a world where people aren't listening to music all the time. The world is rolling on.

That being said? It's so pervasive that to not have your own library of music to play in the background is kind of abnormal. I'm with those who think it's a good idea to put it on yourself. Music in games costs money that I'd rather see going into hiring staff to either fix problems or add to the game at a more rapid pace.

I began using these in some vids under the stipulation that I provide links to which NGNG album(s) the music is coming from.

The most recent.

Other good soundtracks to use: Mechwarrior 2 and MW2: Mercs.
Spoiler

Front Mission (any) soundtrack.
Spoiler

Homeworld soundtracks can add some spice, but it's really got to be the right track and the right time.

What game soundtracks would anyone else recommend? Always got my ears open for good ones.

I use a fair amount of Bon Jovi, last man standing and stuff like that.

...quite a few Touhou fan remixes (and occasionally the actual stuff from the games) but that is hit or miss.

I would need to dig through to give you better than that though, I tend to just hit play all and scramble on my whole music list when I play. ;)

Why is this in new player help, though? While discussing immersion is interesting, it's not going to help new players learn the game.

Good question.

*Continues on as if they're in general discussion as it'll eventually get moved.*

I also find "Going insane" by infected mushroom to go great with any high speed mechs. Lots of good music out there. Problem is most hit "copyright" issues if I use them within my videos. That's why I've been going for game music from other games. Often as a tribute to them.

Some vids even have Final Fantasy tributes hidden within them. One had a star wars theme thrown in.

While in game, I have to disagree with listening to music. I find it much more useful to be able to hear things like explosions and especially footfalls. Numerous times I have detected the enemy coming up behind me because of this. After all, this supposed to be life and death, right?
