While in game, I have to disagree with listening to music. I find it much more useful to be able to hear things like explosions and especially footfalls. Numerous times I have detected the enemy coming up behind me because of this. After all, this supposed to be life and death, right?
I totally agree - I'd find music to be distracting.
Don't get me wrong, back in my Commodore 64 flight sim days I'd have some epic score blaring as I was flying along. It was fun, and also funny to see exactly how much damage I'd taken in the process. One time I didn't realize that one of my engines (on an AH-64) was completely gone until the music had stopped.
But I also think on something like playing paintball - I'd never bring along a ipod and blast heavy metal as I'm jumping between bunkers and spraying paint. Situational awareness is a very key part, and with music playing I can't hear what the other team is doing, and I also can't hear what my team is trying to communicate to me. It's like playing with blinders on.
