To those who want an off switch, I wouldn't recommend an out right off switch. My reason, you will have players like me who will provide very important tactical information over the chat system. If people can turn this off, then I'm saying things and everyone else could just not be seeing what I'm saying (like, HELP E3! or something). It will splinter teamwork more, possibly hinder the game play experience, and make it just that much harder to try to work as a team.
Now, I'm not saying that some people shouldn't be block, as I think you should be able to block some players via social between games, so if you do drop with them you can have them ignored completely. But just turning the whole chat system off will probably be more of a hindrance than a help (and some people will provide helpful tips via chat too, like too close for LRMs, mech need assistance in this sector, watch out for the cliff sniper near this spot, or saying that this many people are already going back for cap. When you are dead, sometimes you can still help even as a spectator).
I think a filter that one can turn on and off might be the easiest solution, with an additional block option in the social screen so you don't have to drop/listen to pilots you know are extremely vulgar. A filter is not squashing the freedom of speech, it helps to enforce a code that many people online don't seem to want to uphold. It's that whole internet animosity thing kicking into high gear.

And I have 3 boys and only the oldest one is allowed to play. But it's an online game, and we had "the talk" about not using the words we hear on the internet. But every time my wife walks by and sees "those words" on the screen, she questions my parenting skills, which makes me sad (I am and awesome dad, trust me).
Trust me, they will hear much worse in high school... but it is good to see the effort being taken in the raising of a kid now. My parents did the same thing with me, but now a days I hear grade school kids cussing like it's cool or something... and some of those parents don't seem to want to do anything about it. This is a possible problem for any internet game, sadly.
