What are some good damage numbers to shoot for per ton?

What are high damage scores, low damage scores?

I generally shoot for 100 per weight class - 100 for light, 200 for mediums, 300 for heavy and 400 for assault.

But I'll also echo what everyone else here has said - damage as an indicator of success just doesn't really work. I'll go to my favorite screenshot for this argument:

This was in a 4SSRM Locust-3S. Damage numbers look good - a great day in a Locust as far as I'm concerned. But then there's the truth behind the numbers:
  • All that damage was against a single mech - you'll see I have no assists, just the one kill (a Cataphract)
  • We lost
  • I spent the whole darned game tied up with this one mech
So in the end, these numbers are only about one thing - and that's being able to brag that I took out a Cataphract in 1 on 1 fighting. As a measure of success, they don't amount to squat.

^This. If you get high damage spread among maybe 6 mechs, you're doing a good job - *if* your team is there with you. It also means that either your aim is off for whatever reason, or the mechs that you're firing on are doing a very good job at spreading damage. This kind of topic is on a situation-by-situation basis though. If you're happy with your performance, your damage doesn't matter as much. Some will hold you to higher standards, others will applaud you.

Someone I drop with - can't remember who now, which I swear will kick me in the face later - goes by an "Armor Value x2" rule on his lights and mediums, and something completely different for his heavies and assaults. What it means is that if he's running a Centurion with, say, 322 armor value, he'd be happy with a 650ish damage match. I know that's a high number to get consistently, but it's what he's happy with.

I, on the other hand, go by a mech-by-mech way. If I get 600+ damage on my Commando and my ammo's all spent, I'm happy, but if I get 550+ on my Hunchback and have two kills or more, I'm happy - it comes down to what *you* think is good, and how well *you* think you perform. That being said, as long as you're helping your team with basically everything you do, your numbers shouldn't be all too high unless you manage to repeatedly flank - or you have a fast recycle, BOOM weapon group that you can continually fire.

Reviled as it often is, I actually think match score amalgamates the various factors reasonably well. I think 30 in a loss, 50 in a win is "acceptable" but hope to far exceed both, of course.

Damage is really wonky. I regularly put up 500 with my Oxide and sometimes it's empty noise, sadly. I can have a dominant game in a high-alpha build and be surprised to see 450-500 along with 3-4 kills because team helped a lot and kills were efficient.

I'm pretty sure I only hit the bigger damage numbers if I manage to trigger an ammo explosion during the fight.

Also weapons matter a lot. SRM's can put out a lot of damage, but it will be spread out. AC20 probably won't cause as much damage, but with a good aim it will be more effective.

Looking at my stats here's how I generaly do on the mechs I have a positive W/L ratio with. (in pugs)
Lights: 150 per match
Medium: 250 per match
Heavy: 250 per match

For example:
HBK-4G (with AC20)
W/L = 1.21
Avg DPM = 206

HBK-4SP (with 2xSRM6)
W/L = 1.04
Avg DPM = 263

on my best damage per mech per chassis (overall w/l is 1.07 since the stats page started, to just barely under 1.0 including from closed beta- overall kdr 1.09 since stats started being kept and at 0.95 including closed beta- probably about 90% pugging- so call me mr. average i guess) i came up with these numbers

hunchy 4sp- 230dmg 1.15 w/l, 1,39 kdr
kintaro 18- 290dmg 1.17w/l, 1.58kdr
blackjack 3- 212dmg 1.21 w/l, 1.3kdr
Jager S- 279dmg 0.98 w/l, 1.34 kdr
shadowhawk 2d2- 215dmg, 1.21 w/l, 0.67 kdr- not fully elited
trebbie 3C- 221dmg . 0.92 w/l, 0.96kdr
jenner F- 243 dmg, 0.67 w/l, 0.62 kdr- just started eliting (win/kill much better-1.21/1.12- in the oxide but less dmg-209)
locust 3S- 63 dmg, 0.96 w/l, 0 23 kdr still working through basics
t-bolt 9SE- 237dmg, 0.81 w/l, 0.65kdr- still working through basics
stalker 3F 253 dmg, 1.25 w/l, .88 kdr only assault i've played

tend to find myself in the middle of the pack (5th-7th) at the end of the match as far as damage goes with say 20% of the time i make the top 4. on the other extreme, bottom 4 scores tend to be me in locusts, bad jenner games, going capping, being impatient or turning the corner and finding two enemy lances there (say about 10-15% of the time).

i try to go by Buckminster's idea of 100 dmg/weight class as far as if i've had a successful match. so pretty much i can hold my own in mediums, hit a bit above my weight in jenners and am bad at everything else
