I have started to allow my daughter, 10, to play a few rounds of MWO on my account.

One MORE reason to have chat filter, like most other games.
My 12 Y.0. plays sometimes and the idiocy and vulgarity is what I'd expect from half a dozen teenagers acting cool.

I love the BJ1, I'm assuming you have it elited out? Speed tweak, jump jets, 2ML's 1 AC20 allow for lots of armor, max engine and plenty of "thump". If she sticks with it, 3ML's, less armor same engine more ac20 ammo, its a stone cold killer-

If she likes the game, start a new account for her, her nic of choice, you hovering over her shoulder and that would give her the noob bonus's, extra earnings etc. Same download on your PC, just two accounts.

Interesting thread. A good read throughout and some solid suggestions. I'm new to the game myself, and my 9 year old boy is interested too. I'm thinking on plugging into a hunch a BJ or a Cent so far after reading this. Will stay tuned and see which way OP goes with this.

Cheers.

this :

or this :

http://mwo.smurfy-ne...08df5a146d5f516

 range, ECM, JJs, great handling, small and forgiving hitboxes and mostly, really fun mechs.

maybe Medium first, then when more skilled pilot 2 smalls

piloting the 5k which needs to be real close with the 4mgs and no ECM, those will also allow to survive longer so learn more !

alot of good recomendations in here

what kind of damage does she do per game at the moment and with what mechs? i only ask cos if she not doing much (which would be normal) then having a brawling medium might not be as good as a flanking medium.

anyhoo my recommendation goes with the cicada 3m as well
very simple build nothing flash

2 large lasers
ecm
biggest engine
max armour
DHS

thats it, simple and effective

easy to use can either have the 2 LL fire at once, or like i do, have left and right mouse buttons for left and right laser
overheating is rarely an issue in this config.
ecm is there for anti missile shield plus if she is supporting heavies then it helps them too
and its as fast as a light to get out of trouble and back to friendlies for help

If it isn't too late to make suggestions...

Griffin 3M: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...c4acc2e2546a287
Has a good balance of weapons, jump, moves moderately fast, and runs fairly cool.
Use the LRMs on targets outside 180m, use everything else within 270m. Fairly simple to use weapons.
And, what I would suggest (have not updated the smurfy yet), keep the stock XL engine, and add in an extra heat sink into the build.

Fork the cash for a cicada X5, maYBE not easiest but for a 10yr old who will be turning circles and pinpointing her lasers and spaming streak at us old fart it will be most gratifing. She will beat you eventualy, might as well get it over with in 2 weeks. Damn her young easy to learn body!!

I let my sons (12 and 10) play and yes they twich skills and far better than mine

The ten year old likes this build its hard to over heat. It it is running hot switch to chain fire and it will cool while you still shoot.

Hunchback 4P
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...397d896c2486e50

Only 2 weapon groups

1) 2 x LLas......................Your long range snipping
2) all the Small Las........ Your brawling weapons

Plus use a 'shift' key to chain them.

Given the new LRM's you might want to find a way to fit a AMS.

1. ECM mech with lasers or ppc( no ammo ) and very efficient cooling.

=> Raven, Atlas DDC, Cicada, SDR

Give her a DDC. That thing survives at least for a while.

I would recommend a fast SSRM Boat with a couple lasers as backup. The playstyle is basically point and click, run and gun. Very easy to get used to. The Kintaro (Golden Boy) seems to fit the bill (5 SSRM2 + 3ML). There's even room for experiments with larger energy weapons/missile launchers. KTO-19 and KTO-20 are free/cheaper substitutes with either less missile slots and/or more energy slots.

Well, I know I started this in the Medium forum, but my daughter (now on "my" second account, controlled by password only I have, much hat tip for that suggestion earlier in the thread) opted for her first mech to go with a Dragon DRG-1N:

http://www.mechspecs...hp?topic=2980.0

Starting using the standard engine configuration:

http://mwo.smurfy-ne...de849bd96544b0d

which is fine because it has more armor than the XL and all it is missing from a weapon standpoint from the xp config is the machine guns, but just 1 short and 1 long range set of weapons on her first chassis I think will be good for learning. It's heavy, but the speed can be good enough and it's durable enough. Even not having to replace the engine, the entire build cost around 9m C-bills (you sometimes forget how much the total bill is gonna be once you load it out like you want to). She had it though plus some to spare after the cadet bonus.

Kids, what can you say. They want what they want. This thread has been so great, I much appreciate all the input and we'll definitely be using it as she moves forward.

I've been thinking about the dragon myself but wish it has 3 missle hardpoints to handle lights.

I think that the Hunchback 4SP is a good Mech for beginners.
It has two smaller hunches with missleslots and 5 energyslots, 2 in each arm and one in the head.
Also it brings decend armor for a medium and a very good torso twist, which helps if you forget where your legs are facing.

You can run it as a laser boat, with 2 Large and 3 Medium Lasers.
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...8571f0cc8540cd8

Or with 5 Medium Lasers and 2 SRM4s.
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...09f69cf3f89532e

Or with some LRM5s instead of the SRM4s.
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...b36ef1879d1be7c

Its a highly maneuverable Mech, with a good punch and decend survivability.

That seems like a solid enough build. Only thing I might suggest is an armour tweak. Take half a ton (16 points) of armour off of the right arm and put a quarter ton (8) points back on to each leg. You don't care about losing the arm, so it can afford to be down a bit of armour, and it makes the legs a little more durable so it won't get legged as easily.

A non-ballistic Dragon is pointless as the Quickdraw can do that build better. I guarantee despite what people say the QD certainly has a much better hitbox than the Dragon.

Personally I am a huge fan of the Hunchback chassis, they are one of the most maneuverable mediums with large twist ranges.

The HBK-4SP, is a tough fairly small medium with no obvious side to target. Depending on what you want to do with the missiles you could run one of these builds. Also the head laser is optional, sometimes it just ends up being a waste since most of the lasers are on the arms, but it can be nice if you get stripped down you still have it.

There is a huge difference between a chassis being good for new players and someone being a fan. Hunches are horrible choices for new players due to their base STD engines, hardpoint placement and chassis design(brawler)

Foreword: In my opinion.... (no facts included or argued for the sake of the OP)

Medium Mech Recommendations:
  • Hunchback - Tank, teaches your kid to rotate torso only to one side to block the "big" hardpoint
  • Centurion - Runs fast, really great for torse twisting practice and works great with arm lock off
  • Griffin/Trebuchet/Shadow Hawk/Kintaro - all feel the same (Slightly less impressive than the Centurion)
  • Cicada/BlackJack - Very similar with zero arm movement, machine guns are fun though
Light Mech Recommendations:
  • Spider - Its fast, has jump jets and really showcases torso twist / arm lock off fun
  • Jenner - Fast and stock isn't bad
  • Firestarter/Commando - Same mech, different weight (diff.Firestarter can take an AC20 hit)
  • Locust - Fast but underwhelming to play
  • Raven - Is total junk in this game (Not the ECM/BAP lone wolf(AKA mech can equip it now it seems) it was in other games)
NOTE: When she gets to assault, sit her down, and tell her the Atlas has, and always will be, the best Assault mech ever...

Congrats on your kid gaming, one of my proudest moments is when I found my daugher (after she put on makeup) blowing stuff up in BF3.

For a newbie medium as orginally requested:

CDA-3M
Lasers, ECM, Speed (but not too much), STD engine and empty arms for survivability, tons of cooling.

For a newbie Dragon 1N as now required:

DRG-1N
Took the version you posted and modified it slightly. The only way she'll get thru 2 tons of SRM ammo is if she's brawling, which defeats the point of the ERLLs. Stripped one ton of the SRM ammo, added a heatsink, moved armor around. Right arm is now a shield, the legs are better armored and you've got good cooling.

1st Mech I bought when I came back to the game after leaving during open beta was the 1N, was a solid mech.

Easy to play would be a hbk-4sp with 5 mediums 2 streaks. Its a symmetrical chassis that doesnt require much in terms of extra torso twisting.

The Cicada-X5 built like a Jenner-D "Streakin' D" would also be a good option.

This "streakhawk" 2d2 or the "streaktaro" kto-18 would also probably go well with a new player.
