Sounds like you may have had an internet connection glitch. If the downloader keeps restarting I would recommend un-installing, and then re-downloading the installer again. If that fails, you really need to send support an error ticket.

No problem.
A few things for a new player (hopefully as I assume your game will work soon)
First: your first 25 matches have a flat in game currency (C-Bills) bonus attached to them, regardless of win or loss you will gain LOTS of C-Bills, save every single cent. It totals up to about 9-11 Million (enough to get you the biggest mechs on the field) If you decide to buy a hero mech, they have a permanent 30% C-bill increase, and they are fun, but they cost real life money, so don't know if you want to invest in that or not. Especially since you're new, If you don't like the game, no money lost, if you do, that's a good way to support the developers.
Second: There are 2 types of currency: C-Bills are the in-game currency, they are only earned by playing matches (win or lose you will make some profit, Winning nets you more money of course) and MC (Or Mech Credits) which is only earned by purchasing it with real life money.
MC can be used to buy mechs, be they hero or not (I'd recommend only using it for hero mechs and XP exchange{more on that below}), and also used to buy paint jobs and cockpit items. (all cosmetic and offer no advantage in play)
While C-Bills can be used to purchase mechs, upgrades, weapons, modules, and other parts gizmos you will need. Make no mistake, this game is NOT pay to win.
You can buy mechs with MC, but they show up stock (bad condition compared to 90% of everything on the field) you will need to earn C-Bills (only gained through play and some achievements) to upgrade and customize them.
As for XP: there are also to kinds of Experience Points: Mech XP, earned by playing a specific mech, which allow you to tune the mech better (more speed, better turning, improved heat management...etc.)
and GXP, earned just by playing the game, GXP is earned at a slower rate though (think Mech XP is how familiar your pilot is with the mech, while GXP is your pilot's general knowledge of piloting) GXP is used for unlocking module upgrades to mechs such as an advanced zoom module that allows you to see farther with a 4x zoom.
In the mean time, you should look at these threads to help you get started on your new player experience

Also if your internet connection sucks (less than 1mbps), I'd just install the game while you're at work/school. If needed you can install it to a thumbdrive and then copy and paste it to your pc at home.

After the patch is done downloading, it has a lengthy phase of applying the patch. Wait a while and the patch button should eventually turn to a play button.

Depends on why you're lagging.
If you're lagging because your internet connection isn't up to snuff (ping too high, packet loss too high, ec) you may not be able to do anything.
- How high is your ping in game? (displayed when you press TAB during a match)
- Do you use wireless connection or a wired conection to your modem/router? Use a wire not wireless.
- If your ping is really high you may simply not be able to play, there is no magic method of reducing your ping.
- If your FPS is in the red, you probably need to adjust your game settings
- Turn everything low/off
- Reduce resolution in the game menu (start from the lowest resolution and work your way up if it works)
- If your PC can't handle the game, you may not be able to play at all.

What Redshift has said is unfortunately a cold, hard truth. Even as low as I consider the graphical quality to be, it is very high in comparison to most free to play games. Add to this the processor heavy nature of the way the game is made, and most dual-core processors are barely able to handle the game even with good graphic cards. Quad core laptops will also struggle if they have Intel HD Graphics as opposed to a real graphics card (Intel HD Graphics milks the computer processor for power).
A laptop will get real hot running this. If you have a desktop computer you can make upgrades without spending an arm and a leg to fix your situation if it's "FPS" lag. 8 gigs RAM minimum (I got 16 and I experience drops too), quad core processor, 2 gig minimum graphics card; the things I needed to comfortably run very high settings. Cool thing is with that I can run BF4 on ultra settings without a problem).

You can also be a pro like me and play with 20fps on a laptop and still kick butt. (Just kidding, I'm not that good.)

I play on fps between 16-23, and I play light mechs zooming around at the maximum speed a mech can achieve in this game.
When I first started my FPS was 9 or 11 on a good day. It's doable. You won't break the 500 damage barrier until much much later, other than that, it's doable. Just set your graphics settings to absolute lowest (the game still looks great even on those settings.), and enjoy the game.
