So this thread made me want to take my old Commando out for a spin. Call me an odd duck, but the COM-3A was always my favorite variant of the Commando. This is the original variant of the Mad Jester, my personal COM-3A of choice. At 144 armor, it's a bit light in the protection department but makes up for it with an alpha strike rating of 36 (35.80 if you want to get specific) that it delivers at 139 kph. Not blinding speed, but fast enough to make it count.

I ran something similar - but with an XL180 instead.

Saved the SRM4's for the 1D

@IraqiWalker Fastest lights? Want to race my locust? 169.3 kph beats all your builds cept TDK

You do know all commandos can go 171, right? That's faster than 169.3.

Also, the builds I posted are my old builds, from back when going over 140Kph caused rubber banding and a lot of problems (except the 2D, I still run the 139Kph 3xSSRM2 build)

A few minutes ago, I decided to try this version instead. It upgrades the engine to an XL210 at the cost of downgrading the SRM6 launchers to SRM4s. You won't run out of ammo nearly as quickly and it's not quite as hot as V1.0 with the added bonus of a pretty quick 150kph top speed with Speed Tweak and a bit more armor. The game I played a minute ago ended with 2 kills, 7 assists, and almost 750 damage with this build.

MMMM Delicious story I bet there were many tears shed on the opposing team, and jaws gaping with awe on your team from spectators. That is the glory of the Commando's, do it right and you make everyone look bad.

That was a match a few minutes ago in the COM-3A with the XL-210. I lost half my firepower early on to a CGAUSS DWF. He ripped my right arm completely off about a minute and a half in. 95% of that damage came from the remaining MLAS and SRM4.

Commando's are insanely fun, but honestly not a great first light mech. I would use a Firestarter, and then move to the commando next

I don't know, I can see arguments either way on this. Firestarters are great mechs but I picked up a lot of bad habits (they soak way more damage than any other light could dream of) in mine that I had to unlearn when I moved on to my spiders. Spiders to commandos was not so big a jump once I stopped spamming the spcae bar and screaming where the #### are the #### jumpjets. Starting in a commando is going to be a rough start but once you master it you will be able to run any light pretty proficiently (except locusts I still can't figure those little bugs out)

Yeah I do know that they CAN be the fastest mech in the game BUT you posted 3 builds that are slower. Hence I said I would race you. Just a small jest. No need to start a war over it.

lol, no war. I was just not sure if you knew that. However, I would not race a locust. Most mechs would lose. (God if only we could get MASC).

Also, click the link in my Sig.

Nothing, but NOTHING, feels like a Locust, and thank God for that!

I started my career in a Commando. It really is the School of Hard Knocks method of mech training. I still remember when I finally broke a .25 KDR. I felt so proud!

I'll second the statement that Spiders and Commandos are similar. Different play styles, to be sure, but the chassis feels and moves the same.

All in all, welcome to the Light Mech fold! May you die well and often!

Hah a commando was my first owned mech. Took me the better part of a month to get my first (legit, non-stolen) kill. 'Course, that was back at the very start of Open Beta, where most teams I faced where premade 8 man teams of veterans, while I was sporting a standard engine 2D (keep r&r costs down).

I'm bad at lights, but will always have a soft spot for that mech.

I purchased myself the 1B model, running a nice and juicy XL engine it

COM-1B final

Its a fun build, But to learn the ancient methods, sacred doors i must unlock

I also bought myself a Jenner F, and i'm learning ALOT from it

JR7-F

SO yeah, off to grind myself these 2 light mechs! Next model: Commando 2D

using the jenner, it feels like i'm flying a viper from battlestar galactica :D

Never strip leg armor on a light.

On the Jenner, you can strip the arms instead. The Commando is a tougher call, but I'd strip the head and 1ML arm.

To the OP, currently working on my Commandos as my last set of lights to master. Re: your builds, as above, need to max out your speed with XL engines - speed and driving like a maniac are really your primary defense. I also put my ammo in the torso - so many players are focused on legging you and if they get your side, you're dead anyway.

Also as said above, I would recommend Jenners or Firestarters as first lights (more firepower and durability), but if you are trying to get ready for CW, the ECM mechs are more useful to the team (Spider, Raven, Commando, or Kitfox)

Theta123, I think your Commando build is just fine. I run slower on all my COMs except the TDK. You've got good armor and good enough speed. You might even consider dropping the engine some more to fit in an AMS. However, I have found that the radar deprivation module works a bit better. Pricey, though.
