You're saying this as though the Grasshopper is significantly different. It's 70 tons, cannot carry ballistics, and has a single missile hardpoint in its head. That's one single crit slot. Your choices are: LRM5, SRM2, SRM4, or SSRM2.

SRM4 is more powerful than the medium laser the Black Knight can stick in it's head. :P

Not with that attitude.

Attitude has nothing to do with it, you used the phrase "rose colored glasses," and then proceeded to make a prediction that REQUIRES ROSE COLORED GLASSES. PGI has repeatedly stated that they will not implement melee combat unless it is done well and interestingly.

The only rose colored glasses are people thinking that the black knight, totally energy based, is in any way better than a mech with JJs that at least has a modicum of differentiation in its builds.

330 Std on the Black Knight, so it is only around 9kph slower than the Timby (which the current meta laser vomit does not mount JJs either) and it could mount 6 ML and 2 ERLL, so :P

Jump Jets didn't save the Quickdraw mind you, and they have around the same hardpoints (except missiles in the head not the torso).

tonnage kills the quickdraw, and bad size, not it's hardpoints. Lets not obfuscate matters. 70 tons vs 60 tons, and the same speed envelope as the 75 ton BK.

A better comparo would be the Jester, which has similar to more limited hardpoints, horrible catapult Hitboxes and yet, in good hands is still a good mech.

That's just icing. JJs is the difference.

Black Knight is inferior choice compared to the Grasshopper. Grasshopper ftw.

*The biggest reason why the 85 ton STK-5M is Tier 2 while 80 ton Awesome is Tier 5 is because it tanks better.
Jump Jets mean crap in comparison..

Go take a good, long look at all of the T1 & T2 IS mechs on the chart.

You will see 80 ton mechs are higher than 100 ton mechs, even though the 100 ton mechs "out tank them".

Because jump jets.

The reason the Stalker is T2 and the Awesome is T5 is because the Stalker is one of the tankiest assaults IS side, and because it has supreme hardpoint placement and the ability to boat weapons.

Not to mention that if you want an energy boat that is "5 tons tankier" than the BK well...there is the awesome.

Grasshopper fanboys forget just how much those JumpJuets and that LRM 5 will cost them in terms of quirks. The black knight will probably get a ton of bonuses to laser weaponry.

Well we won't really know if only one of them comes out!

:D

Honestly, I feel that if popularity is high enough we are likely to see the loser - just at a later date.

my gut tells me Grasshopper would get mobilitiy quirks, and BK would get tanky quirks, both would probably get energy weapon and cooling quirks, but to what degree is the unknown.

i voted BK, but it was more or less a cointoss, i don't like using JJs as much, so i went with 5 more tons, but i would really have liked a "both option" although i get the feeling if there was a both option it would come out like this

0% Black Knight
0% Grasshoper
100% Both

The criteria russ mentioned means we will probably see it sometime in 2015 anyway, just like we will see both the Cyclops and Zeus.

oh COME ON... as much as i like the Blackie for nostalgic reasons.. the grasshopper is so much better,,,

Yup thats why I voted the Black Knight. Don't want any of those 2 mechs, so we're better off with one we already kinda have and might look more badass. Would rather buy the BK. Also, my Jager has no JJ, so why should any other heavy have them?

I sure hope they make the BK look like the one with the fin on the arm, not the sarna one. While I like a lot of the mechs in MWO, the Awesome we got in MWO is imo (one of) the most ugly mechs ingame. Even though I liked the awesome a lot. It should have been more like this:

Tall, sleek and with those iconic blades sticking out, not the lower fat/wide "Danny Devito" Awesome we got, heck you can't even see the blades als blades.

Well, in MWO every single concept art has looked amazing and then upon release we get chunky, boxy, lifeless, oddly proportioned machines that have no sense of scale. IDK why every single IS mech has to be twice as wide and stocky as the original art, and about 30% chunkier than the MWO concept art. The only exception is the stalker, which SHOULD have been chunky like a bulldog and came out looking like a phallic chicken.

I've already posted my points in the main vote thread AND the competing "vote grasshopper" thread... I honestly don't want to repost the same pro-BK post.

I know there's a boatload of nostalgia for this mech, and just forget JJs being part of the BK options... because it's not there. I simply believe the BK will hold up better than the Grasshopper... based on hardpoints (the number and location) and despite the Grasshopper having JJs, I doubt the Grasshoppers "spread of energy weapons" will hold up better than the BK having more energy hardpoints once the arms are shot off and are used for shielding. Of course, all things considered... mechs can be bad due to poor scaling and hitboxes... but we know for sure that the arms of the BK will be large naturally... so it'll inevitably be used for that as much as possible. I'm not sure the Grasshopper will hold up the same way despite the JJs.

Definitely Grasshopper. A 75-tonner without JJs that can't carry missles or ballistics would be not good.
In fact it would be bad.

It almost looks more like a...Gunslinger. The way it's hand is ready to draw at it's hip.

Yeah I know there's a mech called Gunslinger. But this more like a classic gunslinger character.
