I know you are still capable of equipping anything you want but in my mind ignoring these bonuses it would be like say for example making a back stab type rogue character in an RPG type game and then instead of using daggers for some reason you would use a 2 handed mace. I wouldn't do that in a game like that it would be stupid and i wouldn't want to do that in this game except now i wont have a choice.
Eh... true, but as another guy who plays D&D, sometimes I will intentionally pick a theme and make the most powerful character within that theme even if he's not the most powerful build overall. Admittedly, there's no such thing as "competitive D&D," but you get the idea.
Similarly, the fact that people are playing anything but Tier 1 and 2 mechs means that at least a decent chunk of the population enjoys playing whatever suits them, oddball builds, lore specific mechs, etc. In short, they are ignoring better options for their own reasons. I'm guessing these quirks will play out the same way.

HBK-4G engineered around ac20. PGI makes it work better as engineered. Still works fine without ac20. People QQ because their pet build not buffed.
And then they also complain that the game is deviating from Lore... and complain some more when Lore-specific quirks are added... only on the internet!
