Just a shout out to all these people who insist on making a "'Insert Item Name Here' is DOA" post without actually attempting to learn how to use said mech/weapon/module or understanding it's role in the first place.

Please, and I mean it, please look at what you are claiming before posting it for the world to see. A lot of these mechs I'm seeing DOA posts about actually have a role to fill. The Mist Lynx and Ice Ferret are both Clan scout mechs. Yes, the Ice Ferret/Fenris is a medium, that makes it an interesting and almost unique mech (Excluding the Cicada). While the Mist Lynx/Koshi also serves as a scout mech, this is the first of the Clan light scouts. The Kit Fox/Uller is not a scout, it's a support mech, utilising long range weapons combined with it's ECM and multiple AMS to assist it's larger brethren, same can be said for the 35ton Assault mech, the Adder/Puma, it's not a scout mech, it just sits back raining thunder.

With the absence of CW I can understand why some people might dribble DOA nonsense about these mechs. While the spider/firestarter/cicada can fulfil the roles of these mechs in PUG battles, in CW Clan pilots will be unable to take these IS mechs and will instead rely on these Clan designs to fill the scouting/harasser roles.

Weapons!! Weeeee. Pulse Lasers are another DOA post I see all the freaking time, why don’t we just say all weapons except for the LRM are DOA and PGI just rename the game to “LRMWarrior Online”? I hate these pulse laser DOA posts because pulse lasers are not DOA, I find them to be quite the valuable and powerful piece of equipment.

Years ago PGI told us how lasers work, how they distribute their damage. Take the medium laser, while you see a continuous beam, PGI has set it to distribute its damage over approximately 40 evenly timed pulses during the course of the beam duration while the medium pulse does it’s damage over 5 to 10 pulses. Sure, if you are firing your weapon with the precision of the base turrets then how many times your weapon pulses seems pointless, but players won’t always have the accuracy of these Godlike turrets. It is in events where our beam doesn't hit the target all the time where pulse lasers are dealing more damage, whether the pulse deals 0.1 damage or 2.0 damage, you do the math.

Weight wise let’s look at pulse lasers, on heavier mechs where they have less hardpoints but more tonnage pulse lasers are an optimal choice. One example, my AWS-8Q runs 2 PPCs, 2 Large Pulse and 3 Medium Pulse, it’s got loads of tonnage available even with a max size engine so why would I load up on ordinary lasers when I have the tonnage to use Pulse lasers that while heavier, have shorter beam durations, deal more damage and are more likely to kill that annoying light mech on 5 HP CT structure than ordinary lasers are?

So I say again, if you’re going to go on a rant about the pointlessness of certain mechs, weapons or modules please do us a favour and ask yourself "Is my brain DOA?". I asked myself and I'm pretty sure my test came back negative, but I lost the results so who knows?

Now that’s over, I need to make a post about how tactics are OP, PGI needs to nerf tactics.

There you go, a more appropriate title.

Pulse lasers are taken by me for the Lulz. I created the WubShee, a 400XL pulse laser boat, because I felt like doing something incredibly silly.
It performs acceptably. After the recent changes, they are for the most part comparable to their standard counterparts, now that they have the same heat. A measurable risk VS reward, more damage for less range. Instead of less range, more heat, barely any more damage.
A choice can be made now.

As for DoA mechs; I do my best to try them. I don't have a problem calling them bad mechs, though some people on this forum seem to.

Poor hardpoints, lack of tonnage, and the lack of hardpoints that suit that tonnage. PGIs rules on Omnis do ruin a few; lack of hardpoint inflation being one of the worst offenders.

Look at the Koshi F, 3063 timeline, but it has a torso mounted Jesus Box, and 4 E hardpoints per arm. That would be pretty darn nice. You can fit 8 ERSLs. Or 6 SPLs. That could let the Koshi have a unique loadout.
As it stands, it's pretty bad. Not DoA, just bad. Or Terribad.

People generally see no difference between noticeably subpar and useless Mech. Can't really blame them because in the eyes of player there is only very little real difference between terms DOA and "you literally can take anything else in that weight gap and be better off". Technically speaking there is some space between these terms but you know, its like finding difference between mud and bog - both gets you unpleasantly dirty.
