I know MechWarrior 2 was popular back in the day. I remember seeing shelves lined with it back in the late 90's.

But nobody around my age remembers these games (I'm 21, by the way). I guess it's because my generation was made up of 5-7 year olds back in 1995 when Mech 2 was big, and as a complex simulation game, it was probably too advanced for kids as young as I was. Not that it stopped me from playing it anyways. And no, I did not know how to play the game properly until I revisited it two years ago in college.

How old is everyone here? I'm guessing most of the people here, or at least those who played the old MechWarrior games back when they were new are in their late 20's or older. I'd love to meet someone from my own generation who played these games.

You're not alone; I'm 23 years old and had similar experiences. My dad tried to teach me the board game wayyy back when, but I didn't become interested until MW2, when I began hearing the chatter of autocannon fire and squeal of missile lock warnings from his office. In short order I was making my own clumsy forays onto the battlefield. I got MW3 for a 6th grade graduation present and I still remember my younger brother and sister and I playing the Hell out of that, settling sibling-rivalry disputes via clumsily issued batchall, even into our teens when we moved up to MW4 for our Trials.

I was telling someone at work the other day about how stoked I am about MWO... In a sense, I've been a MechWarrior since I was 8. I grew up with this IP, read any books I could get my hands on, I've played every iteration of the franchise (not much of the TT though). It's been an important part of my entire life, really. Between me, my brother, and my sister, we'll have the whole 'sibko' in the field again come summer. Can't wait.

I got my parents to buy the game after I saw one of their friends' teenage daughter playing it. The first time I played it, being the juvenile 5-year old I was, I just kept on shooting in every direction until my Mech overheated and shut down.

When I was a little older, I started playing with cheats on, and my tactic consisted of running into enemy Mechs while spamming every weapon in chain-fire mode. I didn't even bother to look at the mission objectives. I also remember avoiding torso control because it confused the hell out of me. And I never looked at the manual, either. It wasn't until I revisited the game in college that I decided (or rather, learned) to play it the way I was supposed to. And then, it turned out to be surprisingly easy. I beat both campaigns in less than a week.

Any of you guys tried reliving your childhood memories on modern computers? It is hard. Further exasperated for me since I am using a Mac. I ultimately had to use my old Windows XP desktop, which no longer works now. I guess I'll have my MW fix with MW4: Mercs and Living Legends on Boot Camp for now.

I keep hearing great things about living legends but I don't have Crysis Wars, just the original Crysis which I understand is no longer supported by LL... waiting on it to go on sale on steam.

I'm 22 and the first computer game I ever remember playing was MW2. Like others here, I've played every iteration of the computer franchise since then, and read a fair share of the books. I'm rereading the Blood of Kerensky series again currently to gather myself back up to speed on some of the events around this time period. I'd thought this universe and franchise were lost to time, but being able to delve back into it - with other like minded individuals this time - is something I've been sincerely enjoying. You aren't alone here.

I'm 21 as well. The first time I ever heard about mech's was when my mom came home with MW4 in hand. Apparently she'd been a fan of BT for a while. I played MW4 and the Dark Knight expansion in high school, beating them both and promptly moving on to the Mechwarrior games on the xbox and Mechcommander 2 (which doesn't work on Windows 7... grrr...). I am learning more about BT and am seriously looking forward to MWO.

I am 21 as well. I "started" with MW2 back in the 90s. Kinda. We had the game, but for a specific graphics card that we did not have. We just thought it looked like the coolest game and we could look at all the mechs in the mechlab, but as soon as you clicked play, the game crashed. We also had a game, called megatron(not transformers) that was a basic corridor shooter that had a Mad Cat and a Vulture (both probably used without liscence). Nonetheless, these games inspired us (as in me and my brothers) to get MW4 in 2000. Been a mech freak ever since... Just got the box set too!

Ha, I remember reading the Jade Phoenix trilogy in middle school and wanting to be Aidan Pryde when I grew up. As it is, I'm naming my firstborn son Aidan.

Boot Camp is a program that lets you install Windows on a Mac.

I also remember (sort of) MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries. It was included with a new computer that my mom bought in '96 or some time around that. Unfortunately, my mom rented out the basement to a guy who turned out to be a real dick (according to my mom, at least- he would do stuff like use her computer without permission and order Playboy on the family TV- the same TV meant for a child like me) and he did something on the computer one day that screwed it up so that it couldn't play Mercs anymore. But thanks to DosBox, I was able to make up for a missed childhood with that game a year ago.

It was also much harder than MechWarrior 2. I used up all my money on 'mech repairs and wasn't able to buy the heavier 'mechs required for later missions. (I guess it's because I'm just a crappy pilot)

I am 20 years old, and i hear ya, back when MW4 Mercs was starting to come out, shelves were empty that had the title of Mechwarrior. I was about 9 or something when it came out.

I'm 25 years old myself but I clearly remember my first foray into MechWarrior. It was MechWarrior 2 on a friend of my mom's PC and since that point, in general, I've been hooked to all things mech and mecha.

24 here, and my introduction to MechWarrior was completely by accident.

I was 8-9 and at a friend's house. We were playing on his computer and he showed me a game he liked: Warcraft. I told my family about this cool game but couldn't remember the title. Now there were a few CD's that came with our then new computer and one of them happed to have war in the title. I figured this was the game and proceeded to try it out.

I have been a fan of Battletech/MechWarrior ever since.

I think I'm pretty young for playing MechWarrior. I actually got playing it from my mother who also gave me her collection of battletech books. My friends haven't even heard of or don't remember mechwarrior.

I'm 22, similar story to everyone else here. Man, MW2 was a blast back in the day. Though being as young as I was I couldn't figure out how to change the mission, so I just replayed the first one over and over since it never really got old to me... Then the graphics card died. Saddest day of my childhood.

21 here, and another similar story. My 1st experience wasw with MW2, which had come free with my computer, way back in the 5th grade. Parents wouldn't let me play it because of the rating, so I snuck it to school, and my amazing teacher let me install it. I was hooked instantly, and the image of a Mad Cat would forever be burned into my mind as a driving force for more 'mechs. Unfortunately, some jealous classmate stole the disk one day, and I've never seen it again. I hadn't been able to get ahold of another MW game until just this last year when I found out MW4:mercs was free. And I've put more than my fair share of hours into it, but it just couldn't capture the magic of MW2, and I can't for the life of me to get any MW2 downloads to work. Then came the announcement of MW:O. Now I haunt the site, reading every dev post and bit of news multiple times wishing time would skip ahead to release
