Ok, ok - if the numbers are really close by the deadline I'll seriously consider purchasing one to help the numbers cross the line. I'd hate to see the disappointment of players whom I have dropped with or against over the years.

Cheers

Thank you.

Keep up the orders guys! The more you purchase now, the fewer packs I'll have to buy on the last day to make sure this happens- and I don't want it to be so many that I have to explain it to the bank and She Who Must Be Obeyed...

The Urbie is going to be the apex challenge. The white whale of those of us who delight in taking terrible builds into a match and smashing up meta-bots. If you can succeed in an Urbie, you can succeed in anything.

My body is so ready.

Because I've been bored, exhausted and my brain told me it was a better idea than sleep, I've collated a list of everyone who has confirmed they've purchased an Urbanmech on the forum across several threads.

Here are the totals from that list:
Total stated 'Bought' (Assumed Standard, could be Collectors): 87 Value: US$1,740 (GB£1,166)
Total Confirmed Standard: 30 Value: US$600 (GB£402)
Total Confirmed Collectors: 116 Value: US$4,640 (GB£3,109)

Total Confirmed Packs: 233 Value: US$6,980 (GB£4,677)
1 - This is within roughly 52 hours of it being available, and only confirmed purchases.
2 - 50% or greater of all packages purchased, that have been confirmed, are Collectors packs.

As of 6 hours ago (roughly 48 hours since it went up for sale) we have hit roughly 75% of the target needed to ensure it gets made.
We have another 8 days to get that remaining 25%.

I'll grant that the screwed up heat model (and screwed up heat sink model) in this game makes the DHS feel necessary, but how about we not spit on the very idea of the Urbanmech by making it even remotely able to move that fast.
Commandos are supposed to move at 97kph. They do 173 in MWO. That's a 66kph difference.

An Urbie at 100kph is.. Roughly 66kph faster than stock, too.

If its much slower than 100kph, it will be effectively unusable in MWO. You don't need to go screaming fast, but unlike TT going slow in MWO doesn't just make you more likely to get hit, it makes it more likely to get hit both where your atavker wanted to hit you and ensures all weapons hit that spot. On a 30t light, that's death.

No amount of (reasonable) quirks would change that... And the unreasonable quirks that would (70% damage reduction?) Would be terrible for the game.

Mechs in MWO all move _vastly_ faster than stock (obviously excluding clan mechs, which are locked at fast). I can't think of any mechs customarily built at their stock speeds for normal MWO use.

Customarily, mind you, there's always oddball builds.

their tabletop speeds are like twice or more stock IS mech speeds. Ever actually look at how fast the vast bulk of IS mechs move at, with stock engines? For IS mechs, 80kph is screaming fast, pushing into the domain of lights. The Urbanmech is slow, but its not so absurdly slow compared to average IS speeds as it seems vs. our builds in MWO.

Basically, is heavy assaults move at 54kph, heavies at around 64, mediums at 86 kph, lights at 97kph. So, 32kph for the urbanmech is very slow, but the tabletop comparison is a lot different than what engine caps in MWO give.

Been playing a few matches today in lights, when armed with mid range weapons I did well around speeds of 50 - 90 in a 25 ton mech. It is up to pilot/gamer to make the mech work.

But really, the point isn't about TT at all, but rather how a light armoured mech would just die practically instantly in MWO at assault speeds.

And that's awesome! If you want to pilot a horrifically slow Urbanmech, I 100% support and understand that, and no matter what you'll be able to.

But don't - and I'm not accusing you here - say others are Having Fun Wrong for wanting a still slow but faster than TT Urbie. Everyone can have their Urbie and pilot it as they like.

Tolerance and understanding, everyone. There's Urbie enough for everyoneurbiebuddy.

Don't mind a decent engine limit, but it would feel awkward moving as fast as a Spider in an Urbie. Myst Lynx speed would be nice to have as an option I will admit.

As àrt of my Urbie Celebration, I thought I would try to bring to life some of the many wacky, wonderful and downright absurd Urbie variations I came up with over the course of a 20 year Urbanmech campaign. (No promises about the Urbie LAM, but I might knock out the Shahid and Fire Support Variants)

This one, is nicknamed the "Pocket Awesome".
Posted Image

It's the product of the FedSuns Military Industrial Complex of the late 3030s/early 3040s. Originally it was a test mule for the new NAIS Double Heat Sinks, and Ferro-Fibrous Armor. A few nobles from the Draconis March liked the idea though, and financed a short run of refits on their existing Urbanmech forces.

Taking a base UM-R60, the mech was stripped to it's bare chassis, and a DAV 90 fusion plant installed, increasing it's top speed to 54.6 kph. Retained were the stock jumpjets, though they were moved to the side torsos to free up room for the larger engine. In place of the stock 6 tons of armor, are 4.5 tons of Ferro-Fibrous, netting in slightly less overall protection, but with the intended role, and lack of volatile ammunition supply, it was deemed an acceptable trade off. The familiar light laser was moved from the left arm over to the head or center torso, depending on preference. And in place of the medium-heavy autocannon, 2 Donal PPCs were installed, 1 in each arm. Keeping their fierce heat in check? 10 of the new Double Heat Sinks.

The idea of having the punch of a Warhammer or Marauders twin PPCs, in such a small package was intoxicating. But even better, was the price. Brand new, they cost a scant 1.8 million to produce, but if it was a refit, it cost less than 1 million cbills per unit. Compared to the price of 6.5 million for a single AWS-8Q Awesome, and it was too tempting.

While certainly no replacement for an actual assault mech, they proved useful. 3-4 could be purchased for the price of a single Awesome, providing 2-3 times the firepower. While their armor protection is obviously MUCH lighter, the fact that one had to destroy multiple targets help alleviate that. Also, the weapons were intentionally high mounted to allow the new UrbanMechs to fire easily from armored defilades, for minimal exposure. Lastly, their jump jets give a little extra mobility.

As the 3050s approached, they were already being obsoleted by newer, more heavy designs using the new tech, and by the Clan Invasion, they were relegated purely to backwater militia status with the rest of the Urbanmechs, but for a few brief years, the Pocket Awesome got to shine in several engagements against Pirates and Combine forces who were not prepared for 30 ton garbage cans with legs to pack so much firepower.

-snip-

A weird build I just thought of is the Ion Cannon.

Heavy PPC + Capacity + Targeting Computer = Long-range pinpoint accurate AC/20. Ouch...

I might try to think of other weird ones later.
