1. Find a mech that suits you. To be considered:
- Typ (Light, Medium, heavy or Assault)
- tech-base: Inner Sphere or Clans ? While both have basically the same stuff, the Clan's have the more potent stuff. For instance, their weapons have a longer range and more damage-output. But the often need a bit more skill (Their lasers, for example, burn longer, so you have to keep up the aim at your target for longer.)
- speed: wanna go fast ? exclude assaults and heavies.
- wanna have lots of armor and weapons ? exclude lights and mediums
- hardpoints: how many, what type (balistic, energy, missiles), and where (high hardpoints vs. lower hardpoints)
- what weapons suit your playing style ?
- in short: its the right combination of mech, weapons, equipment AND the pilot.
2. Try to become a better player.
- watch Kanajashi's videos
-> here.
- this video includes some good tips in a real match:
MechWarrior Online - Like A Surgeon
- in general: the longer you live, the more exp and Money you
will can make.
- stick with your team, at least with some of them.
- Be patient. This is probably the most important virtue in this game.
3.: Stop judging your teammates without knowing why they do what they do.

My King Craff is 48 kph and I still manage to be the 1st one in combat that's how cowardly people on this game are.
(Don't take this personal; you are not the only one doing it, btw. And even i do that from time to time.)
You should rather find out why they do what they do; ask them. Politely, not in an offending way. Like:
"Any particular reason why we have stopped here ?"
vs.
"Why are you such cowards ???"
While most players are rather silent, you might get a reply sometimes.
The first question is more likely to get you an answer, the later one not so much.
As i said, patience is a virtue in this game. I agree that there is a fine line between "waiting" and "waiting to long".
Being the first one into combat means you die first, when your teammates don't follow you.
So if you see they don't follow you, but you go anyway - then it's not your teams fault when you die. They are NOT your servants.
If you want to charge, why don't you ask your teammates to follow you ?
Say where you want to go to, and if someone wants to join your charge.
It did work for me... sometimes.
See you on the Battlefield !
