Many people only want to master and use the best mechs in the game. But I think its the mechs that aren't meta, or may not be "good" that are the most fun to pilot.

When you run a meta build and do well, you don't feel very rewarded, you are expecting to do well.
but when you run that AC2 Locust, Gargoyle, or Badjack 3, and you win, you feel fantastic.

Games are supposed to be fun, so why Grind for the best, when you could be having fun with the worst?

The thing is that good mechs aren't automatically boring, and bad mechs aren't automatically fun. If anything, having a better robot might be more fun a lot of the time because you could inflict more damage/kills/dakka/pewpew on the red team.

For example, I like the Loki and Shadow Hawk a lot even though though they're pretty good gundams. The Wubhawk can also be soothing at times with its therapeutic relaxing wubcannons...

Long time Awesome pilot here.

No matter what happens with this game, the Awesome will always be the best mech at pushing excrement uphill (the fact that no other mechs do it is irrelevant!).

Not exactly a glowing endorsement to put on a Resume, but it's... something.

Your talking to a guy who runs a Dire wolf with 4 gauss rifles. The pros don't use that, and if I position myself wrong I get decimated in seconds, but when it works and I have a big, open map to play on, it's godlike.

thing is, lots of different views of fun. For some, only winning is fun.

For others, like you and me, it's the fight itself, and a good los is more fun than a stomp win.

Heck, some people find math fun.

That said, I certainly echo your general outlook. I'm the guy who would rather get beat up in a Vindicator that roll people in a Timberwolf. I love my stock Summoner.

That said, it doesn't make me blind to their weaknesses, and the worst stuff, I campaign to have fixed.

But I don't have the desire or time to "git gud" and be a comp at a video game. I have a pretty dang demanding and fulfilling IRL, and am on here to relax and have fun. I play this because I love Battletech and it's lore... not to be the best at "Generic Stompy Robots Online".

I've never run "meta" builds. I also don't look at the game as "win at all costs".

I build mechs that are fun for me and I have fun in good fights - win or lose.

Meta is created because it is choosing the bestmechs and the bets loadouts, so meta is the best. This is the nature of the meaning meta.

but meta does not relate to fun or truly being good, a noob in a metamech will still suck. and some pilots can pilot even trash to a good level. But this automatically does not make this trashmechs meta or truly good.

This game needs twink meta. As in, Elo or the queue should distinguish (or give option) for twink rounds. **** that is rogue; obscure. RVN 4Xs, Kit Foxes, Awesomes, abound. Would be pretty fun. I'm not sure how it would work, probably some sort of arbitrary damage 'cap' mechanic ie, IS assaults can't take more than 40, clan 45, heavies 30, 35, meds 20, 25, lights 10, 15. Or maybe something like, you can only equip 1 or 2 wep of each wep type on any given mech.

I guess that **** can be accomplished just fine via third party 'league' or something and private matches.

But under PGI's economy model we cannot get to know if the mech is fun or not before buying them. If it was like League of Legends, where you get free mechs in rotation to try out and customize... ...trial mechs just won't do.

I just started the Cicada's today. So much fun. Not meta, but not doing to badly either. Minus the heavily trolled last two matches I played. :(

There is trial mechs. The issue isnt ignored. The fact they dont open all 100+ mechs for trial isnt really a valid complaint. The cheapest variants are not so much to get for a while and try out anyway.

Yeah, trial mechs with their fixed loadouts. Doesn't even come close to let me enjoy them.

I think its a phase. First you try hard, win by all means possible. They will even cheat, sync drop, every fricken way they can to win, be winner, #1.

But then when that top dog gets bored he might look to WIN on one's own terms. gets creative, has fun.

I like appreciating mechs and entertaining. Like a firestarter that uses flamers, I shoot narcs with my kintaro, upgraded versions of stock mechs, I have to shove 6 machine guns into my king crab........ and one day.....urbanmech

In faction I want to run the stereotypical, Im prob notch off from roleplaying

Did you not read my previous post? League of Legends offer 10 free champions per week to try them out, and then they replace them with another 10 at the beginning of the next week. You can deck them with your own runes and masteries (which you bought) to customize and experiment with them the way you like it. I personally would like similar system in MWO, cause many trial mechs' configurations are very different than what people actually play in, thus not indicative of their fun factor.

Couldn't agree more..
I had great fun in a com-tdk over the past few weeks, along with a few 700+ damage games.

I do it all the time, too. And I just started the mech 2 days ago.
