I spend over 500 bucks in this game over the last 3 years which would be 14 bucks per month.
Of the 44 available chassis, I have 113 mech variants
- 39 of them are Clan mechs (3x13 from the packages)
- 18 are Phoenix/Saber mechs
- 8 are Hero mechs
- (soon 12 more resistance mechs and 16 Wave3 mechs not yet available)
Thats around 3 mechs per month (or 1.3 mechs per month without the packages/heros).

Yes I collect a lot of mechs (greedy collector I am) without selling more than 4 variants (2 ravens and 2 dragons) I still have 13 free mechbays, most from events or sales.

I think I've got quite the value for my money here. I don't think this game needs to be cheaper or faster, but the new-user experience needs to be improved, to have better player retention, because the gameplay and skill level needed is quite hard on new players.
Some COOP vs AI (at least as a tutorial or beginner level map) would also help player retention.

'Ownership' is kind of a dead end anyway. Sure, I own X-Wing... but I doubt I could find the box, the disc, or a computer to run it on. I still play Master of Orion (very rarely) but as Windows marches on it gets harder and harder to run.

I paid full price for MoO3 but that don't mean I can ever stomach playing the horrible thing...

Just spend what you feel "if the game lasts another 6 months and I play it when I feel like, I got my money's worth".

If you are spending money that you need a solid guarantee you will be able to 'own' these mechs for 3-5 years or more to be 'worth it', it's probably time to re-evaluate.

On the other hand, there are plenty of games out there that have been around 7 years or longer without Battletechs fanbase...

(edit: Everything Reno said, echo here)

Wha... she's hot and I can't say no. She's fine (maybe not as good as others I'm sure, but I don't want to get OT on this - there are plenty of attractive actresses that can't act for sure though).

Really? She was amazing in Black Swan, was one of the best parts of V For Vendetta, and had a very bright early career with Leon/The Professional and Heat. I wouldn't say Queen of the Earth material, but definitely in my favorite actresses list.

A massive detour from the thread, I know. :)

Emma Stone already reigns. And has far better acting chops to boot.

I like you Terciel, but you take that back. Now. Or there will be words ;)

As for MWO, longevity, and cash expenditure - I've been here for 30 months, give or take, and I've spent around $500. That's roughly $15/month - or almost exactly what MMO's used to cost.

$15/month works out to less than $0.5 for me.

(Incidentally, I've always had at least one MMO sub going as well for the last 10+ years...)

Now Skyrim... works out to about $0.1 - $0.2/hour - but those games are exceptions; the average AAA boxed game gives me a much lower cost/hour ratio, generally $2 - $5/hour.

And in the end, even that is better than the average movie ticket, not to mention concert ticket, or sports event ticket.

So I guess MWO is about as cheap or expensive than any other MMO, and like many other MMOs these days you decide how much you want to spend - it is entirely possible to play MWO without paying a dime.

So if price isn't really threatening the longevity of MWO, what is? Personally, I think repetitive gameplay is the largest risk factor - which is why I applaud the mumblings I hear about asymmetrical fights, 4v4, and new game modes.

Anyway, I don't think MWO is in any danger of dying at the moment.

I would really love to see a PVE campaign but I think most people would be disappointed. How many times would the average player play through, 2-3 at most. That's a huge amount of work to maybe give a weeks entertainment. Then it would be complaints about the lame PVE and not enough content and wheres the end game etc. I think they should perfect what they have and make it a very good PVP game first and foremost. That is where everyone spends the real time.

I don't think PGI are big enough to build any large amount of quality PVE stuff.

Or they could make a mixed pvp/pve scenario like the very first Alterac Valley in WoW. You had to fulfill missions to get advantages in the scenario and a real chance to win

Black Swan was a masterpiece, and Portman nailed it. My wife was bawling by the end of the movie (former ballet dancer), and considers the movie more of a documentary than fiction.

Every F2P/MMO always has its predictions of impending doom.

The game is in active development, yes that means constant beta buggyness, but its because new features are being added and game kept fresh.
When nothing is changed for a couple of months that's when you can start worrying that it has been shelved and will become stale.

I would hope if the game ever went down, they could release some software so people could still host their own servers after the fact

Thank you, I'm glad someone else here appreciates that movie as much as I do. I kind of figured that the demographic here might skew more action than arthouse, or even drama. Don't even get me started on my love of P T Anderson or Akira Kurosawa movies.

well, on the upside, when and if PGI closes the servers, I will have all my 3D models still..... and with the magic of 3D printing I will at least have some momentos..... and some much better quality miniatures than the official Btech ones.

Didn't see it, as I tend to avoid nudity, graphic violence, excessive profanity, etc (and from the reviews, it seemed to have 1 or 2 of the 3, lol), just as a personal choice (experienced too much IRL to want to entertain myself that way) . That said, from a storytelling standpoint, from what I have gleaned it was quite the thriller.

And ain't nothing wrong with Kurosawa..... or Action Fliks, lol. Speaking of newish films, ever see "When the Last Sword is Drawn" (Mibu gishi den)? Not quite Kurosawa, but a pretty fine, thoughtful film.

Well, in NCIS:Los Angeles they apparently can do that.......
Would print the cockpit of my HBK-4G(F) as a life size computer pit if I could.

Well, Black Swan had no nudity, not a lot of profanity (very little if any), and only one very brief scene with violence. On the other hand, it has a scene with Mila Kunis and Portman that... yeah. You know what? Just go watch the movie.

that'd be one big ass printer... then again, you could do it in segments.... just turn it in to a giant lego kit... That gives me an idea for a freaking awesome sim-pit....

Tobad my wife wouldn't let me do it....

I am a very frugal yankee so I am super careful what I invest in. Main reason I am not a founder. I felt it was crazy to take a chance on PGI's track record. I have spent a fair bit of money since and I was about to buy a pack this weekend but two things bother me about this game.

First Russ and his love affair with twitter and NGNG. Both I feel are a detriment to solos and casuals. Many do not want to chase for info or hire a research assistant to do so. The website and forums are neglected. Maybe if Russ had to navigate through this maze he might see whats going on. Instead he gets fed manure from NGNG or whomever bothers to twitter him. I especially like the clowns who type " I sent a message to Russ on twitter" Like they are privileged or something..

Second their need to have another challenge disaster this weekend. Last time there was a wall of complaints on multiple threads pages long. Just shows how much they ignore us here. There is little response or any. Oh, maybe on twitter. I ain't lookin.

I am holding off spending anything because of that.

I'm less concerned about the longevity of the game, since I don't really see it actually dying any time soon honestly and it seems to be improving slowly, but the extremely high asking price for things like mechs is definitely a big factor in why my wallet has stayed pretty much closed.

Well Alistair you can blame all the Asian hackers and Asian PC game cloners for all the worthless online MMO games piracy drove the PC game industry almost into the dust. MWO is a-A typical rip off in a game industry that sets there standards very low and expects there rewards to be super high.

Over the last few years kids are getting wise if a game is garbage and low quality and low content they wont pay into the game just play it for free as long as it stays online then move on to a new crapp MMO and do the same over and over again. In a way you cant blame them the developers give this hugh hype before the game is 1/8 done then go into a total crap beta when the game is only 1/4 of the quality of older AAA game titles.

Forsa4-6 for Xbox360-xbox1 is a classic example of crapp made game as is MWO for PC both were billed as great simulations and both =Fail.I have to go back and play Forsa2 for xbox360 to get that simulation play just like I have to go back to PC MechWarrior2-4 to get good simulation-PVE-Expansions or just have real fun playing the game with family and friends.

MWO is a shallow game with a lot of potential but the devs are just lost on what is good game development and what could keep MWO alive for another 10 years IF THEY ARE EVEN STILL WORKING ON MWO and have not moved on to a different game and JR STAFF are managing MWO is all.Plus the Devs wont listen to anything that does not work with there terrible core game design.
