If you have the patience for collecting the C-Bills go for the Crow.
Only downside i can imagine are it's cost in Bills.

If you want to start with something less expensiv the Centurion or Hunchback won't let you down as was stated somewhere above.

Things like the heat buildup, the different variants and playstyles will come with time.
But the Crow is most likely the best Medium Mech in terms of flexibility and can even take a good punsh while dishing out very good, well at last in my point of view.
It can even compete with some of the heavier Mechs easily.

enough on topic to give me the confidence to derail this topic slightly: is there/are there decent IS alternatives to the stormcrow (griffin or wolverine?)?

I liked the Royken (Stormcrow) and ran it for a full 25 matches. It's got some decent gear and armor, I just wish I could add some SRM's and some more beefy lasers.

Sparky would make a good imitation stormcrow prime. Cn9-d has great lb10x quirks and and can go fast. It might make an underpowered c(whatever the current trial variant is). Also, he Griffins make good srm brawlers so could work like the srm variant of the stormcrow. IS streaks suck though so no replacement for the streakcrows

As far as I know, the best comparison to the Stormcrow would be the Shadowhawk. The Shadowhawk is basically the equivalent IS 'Mech.

IS 55 ton ‘Mech
People say the IS has no 55 ton 'Mech like the Stormcrow. Here's me trying to prove them wrong -

Streak/anti-light 'Mech: (I actually play this one, and it can rip those lights apart, even though it can't catch up to them and run them down. But the same can be said for the Streakcrow, so meh.)

Long-range sniper:

'Laser Vomit'

'Missile Boat'

Not taking quirks into account. These were whipped up in about 8 minutes, so the optimization might not be there.

StormCrows are by far one of if not the best mechs to get first. The up sides of the mechs out weigh any other mech in the game as your first cbill purchase.

They come ready out of the box
great hit boxes
can run anything you want
fast
agile
they will teach you proper torso twisting and heat management

The only down side is the weak Clan ballistics.
