For some reason, the last 3 weeks when in a match I've been randomly assigned the Command star...

Not sure why it happens, but it happens in about 15% of my matches.

Anyone have any idea why? To my knowledge it's not possible to assign it to someone else.

There is a hot key to take command. I don't know what it is, but I accidentally press it all the time and wind up with the star or the bars.

you pressed spacebar in just the right way. In MWO jumpjetting makes you leader material.

This is a bug as old as MWO itself (or at least closed beta).

It can be triggered by anything really. Opening chat, pressing enter, turning on night/heat vision, enabled throttle lock - and most commonly - jump jets. It can either give you lance / company command, but usually company.

I believe it must have something to do with latency, as I get this bug in around a quarter of my games, but don't see it happening to other people as often.

It really disheartens me though, to see such a simple bug go unfixed for so long... Surely there's some method that's being triggered somewhere that takes command, so why don't they just open up their IDE, click on on the method and go "find references" and remove the one that shouldn't be there. If you check my sig you'll find plenty more long standing bugs that are just as simple to fix

In any match where I'm the first to say something. I've almost always be given command, unless someone claimed it, and in that case I would be assigned to lance commander.

If I'm the fourth to say something, the people before me need to die before command is passed down.

I whole heartedly believe it's based on chat.

I first noticed it February of last year, well after release. And I've been around since relatively early open Beta.

It has something to do witht he space bar. I only get the star when I am in the middle of a jump. Has it ever been addressed by PGI?

For me, it happens when i press space. Don't know what exactly triggers it, but it always happens when using jumpjets.
I didn't try to rebind JJ to see if using JJ or pressing space causes it.

actually it is not the space bar but the jumpjet key. I have it on num0 (because leftie) and I get command in 50% of my matches when I jump.

The biggest joke is, you don't need jumpjets for this. what is needed is airtime. So hopping down a little ledge or just stepping down some little rock is enough to trigger the bug (when pressing the jump key, of course).

I never experienced this for myself, but I have seen people who take command during the last 30sec of a match where we're just chasing down the last enemy light and always wondered "wtf does that dude think he's gonna lead at this point??". Makes more sense now!

Anyway, I thought this thread was gonna be about the random lead assignment when the leader of a public group leaves party. If you are a group leader in a public group, is there a way to assign who takes group lead when you leave?

This is the only multiplayer game I've ever played where leaders leaving group never say "hey dudes I gotta go, who wants lead?". Instead they just drop and group lead randomly goes to the afk guy with no mic.

Yeah I find it really stupid that there's still no "promote" button after all this time. The only way to pass on command now to have everyone leave one by one until the correct person is in command.

It can happen with pretty much any button outside WASD.
Heres a video where acquired command on a mech without JJ's. I think this time was when I pressed 0 on the numpad for full throttle
