Custom names assigned to a Mech should be carried through in all areas. While it's important to see the model designation DRG-xxx, a custom name adds a bit of flare and pride to game. The general public doesn't know model type of the plane, but they what the Memphis Bell did. Just saying it seems to be pointless to be able to name a mech, if you only see it in one screen and your enemy can't see it either.

It prevents the players from sending obscene messages, racist insults and other such stuff into the game without the effort of actually typing it.
There is a thread named "Share your mech names" and in the beginning some users (more then you'd imagine) showed that they are actually naming their mechs like this. And they actually thought this would be acceptable and funny.
The naming is for you only and that is a good thing.
